  1. 1. Analysing the effects of governmental control policies in transport chains using micro-level simulation

    Author : Linda Ramstedt; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Transportation; Transport chain; Governmental control policy; Micro-level simulation;

    Abstract : Increasing freight transportation volumes continue to increase problems related to human health, congestion on the transport infrastructure, noise, climate changes, etc. Governments often want to minimize these negative effects, and this wish is expressed in societal goals, e.g., to reach environmental targets. 2. 2. Conflict in the Eye of the Storm : Micro-dynamics of Natural Disasters, Cooperation and Armed Conflict

    Author : Colin Walch; Cecilia Albin; Ashok Swain; Richard Matthew; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : armed conflict; natural disaster; rebel group; micro-dynamics of civil war; resilience; disaster risk reduction and management; rebel group recruitment; conflict analysis; climate change; cooperation; conflict resolution; negotiation; ripeness; the Philippines; India; Colombia.; Peace and Conflict Research; Freds- och konfliktforskning;

    Abstract : Many of the most destructive natural disasters have taken place in situations characterized by armed conflict and insecurity: the Indian Ocean tsunami in Sri Lanka and Indonesia in 2004, the floods in Pakistan in 2011, the drought in Somalia in 2011 and typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines in 2013. Surprisingly little research has systematically explored how armed conflict affects natural disaster management, and how shocks from natural disaster influence conflict dynamics. READ MORE

  3. 3. Energy Management in Large scale Solar Buildings : The Closed Greenhouse Concept

    Author : Amir Vadiee; Viktoria Martin; Philip Griffiths; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Thermal Energy Storage; Energy Saving; Thermoeconomic Assessment; Energy Management Scenario; Micro Climate Control; Solar Building; Closed Greenhouse; SRA - Energy; SRA - Energi;

    Abstract : Sustainability has been at the centre of global attention for decades. One of the most challenging areas toward sustainability is the agricultural sector. Here, the commercial greenhouse is one of the most effective cultivation methods with a yield per cultivated area up to 10 times higher than for open land farming. READ MORE

  4. 4. Materials Design for the Improvement of SiC Field Effect Gas Sensor performance in High Temperature Process Control applications

    Author : Lida Khajavizadeh; Mike Andersson; Fredrik Eriksson; Krisztian Kordas; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : Following growing concerns about the effect these last decades of accelerating energy consumption, escalating use of natural (not the least fossil) resources, and waste generation has had on earth’s climate, human health, and the environment, industry is facing mounting pressure to increase the energy-, resource-, and cost-efficiency of both processes and products while drastically reducing pollutant emissions. In response, industry is, besides increasing their utilization of renewable energy and introducing new bio-based products, taking advantage of the rapid development in 5G technology and associated wireless interconnectivity to move towards full automation of production processes and facilities. 5. 5. Essays on Field Experiments and Impact Evaluation

    Author : Remidius Denis Ruhinduka; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; adaptation to climate change; ambiguity; artefactual field experiment; behavioraleconomics; charcoal; credit; deforestation; endogenous switching regression; field experiment; guilt; honesty; impact evaluation; kindness; liquidity constraint; LPG stoves; rice marketing; risk preferences; system of rice intensification; Tanzania; time preferences;

    Abstract : Paper 1: Improving Welfare Through Climate-Friendly Agriculture: The Case of the System of Rice Intensification We use rich survey data to investigate the economic impact of a climate-friendly rice farming method known as the system of rice intensification (SRI) on the welfare of rain-dependent small-holder farmers in Tanzania. SRI reduces water consumption by half, which makes it a promising farming system in the adaptation to climate change in moisture constrained areas, and it does not require flooding of rice fields, resulting in reduced methane emissions.
