  1. 1. Coal and Oil: The Dark Monarchs of Global Energy : Understanding Supply and Extraction Patterns and their Importance for Future Production

    Author : Mikael Höök; Kjell Aleklett; David Rutledge; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; oil production; coal production; depletion rate; forecasting; energy supply; Physics; Fysik; Other earth sciences; Övrig geovetenskap; Physical planning; Fysisk planläggning; Other engineering physics; Övrig teknisk fysik; Physics with specialization in Global Energy Resources; Fysik med inriktning mot globala energiresurser;

    Abstract : The formation of modern society has been dominated by coal and oil, and together these two fossil fuels account for nearly two thirds of all primary energy used by mankind.  This makes future production a key question for future social development and this thesis attempts to answer whether it is possible to rely on an assumption of ever increasing production of coal and oil. 2. 2. Depletion and decline curve analysis in crude oil production

    Author : Mikael Höök; Kjell Aleklett; Roger Bentley; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; depletion rate; decline curve analysis; crude oil production; Other earth sciences; Övrig geovetenskap; Mathematical physics; Matematisk fysik; Other engineering physics; Övrig teknisk fysik; Physics with specialization in Global Energy Resources; Fysik med inriktning mot globala energiresurser;

    Abstract : Oil is the black blood that runs through the veins of the modern global energy system. While being the dominant source of energy, oil has also brought wealth and power to the western world. Future supply for oil is unsure or even expected to decrease due to limitations imposed by peak oil. Energy is fundamental to all parts of society. READ MORE

    Abstract : Throughout history, major rivers and shared water bodies have allowed civilizations to flourish, and the effective management of shared water bodies has always been a priority for societies and nations. Today, about 40% of the world’s population lives in proximity to the 286 transboundary river and lake basins that supply 60% of the world’s freshwater flows and make up about half of the Earth’s land area. 4. 4. Global energy transitions : Renewable energy technology and non-renewable resources

    Author : Simon Davidsson; Mikael Höök; Kjell Aleklett; Björn Sandén; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; energy transitions; natural resources; renewable energy; sustainable development; growth curves; Natural Resources and Sustainable Development; Naturresurser och hållbar utveckling;

    Abstract : The global energy system is dominated by the use of fossil fuels. This system suffers from several problems, such as different environmental issues, while the long-term energy security is sometimes questioned. READ MORE

  5. 5. Natural resources and sustainable energy : Growth rates and resource flows for low-carbon systems

    Author : Simon Davidsson; Mikael Höök; Gert Jan Kramer; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : Large-scale deployment of low-carbon energy technologies is important for counteracting anthropogenic climate change and achieving universal energy access. This thesis explores potential growth rates of technologies necessary to reach a more sustainable global energy system, the material and energy flows required to commission these technologies, and potential future availability of the required resources.
