  1. 1. Water film-mediated mineralogical transformations and photocatalytic reactions

    Author : N. Tan Luong; Jean-Francois Boily; Michael Holmboe; Alejandro Fernandez-Martinez; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; mineral; water films; carbon dioxide; MgO; MnCO3; TiO2; hydroxylation; carbonation; oxidation; transformation; photocatalysis; Inorganic Chemistry; oorganisk kemi; nanomaterials; nanomaterial; Physical Chemistry; fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : Mineral particles capture water vapor in the atmosphere in the form of water films that are only few monolayers thick. Water films form nanoscale hydration environments that mediate a wide range of important reactions in nature and technology. READ MORE

  2. 2. Biomimetic Formation of Calcium Phosphate Based Nanomaterials

    Author : Wenxiao He; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; superstructure; lyotropic liquid crystal; self-assembly; Calcium phosphate; bone-like apatite; amphiphilic peptide; nanocomposite; biomimetic mineralization;

    Abstract : The intercellular material in bone is a nanocomposite of aligned “hard” inorganics—calcium phosphate (CaP) platelets embedded in the long-range ordered “soft” organic collagen matrix. This elaborate structural arrangement redeems the weaknesses of the individual components (being soft protein or brittle mineral) and gives bone its excellent mechanical properties for the protection and support of our bodies. 3. 3. Development of Polyamide Solvent Extraction Reagents for Trivalent Lanthanides

    Author : Mikhail S Tyumentsev; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Polyamides; Solvent Extraction; Europium; Rare Earth Elements; Lanthanides; Malonamides;

    Abstract : Rare earth elements (REEs), including lanthanides, are critical materials for many industrial technologies. As a result recycling of end-of-life products containing REEs might be beneficial, as this could partially satisfy the growing demands of industry for these elements. READ MORE

  4. 4. Generation, stability and migration of montmorillonite colloids in aqueous systems

    Author : Sandra García García; Mats Jonsson; Tiziana Missana; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bentonite; montmorillonite; colloid stability; colloid migration; geological disposal; nuclear waste; granitic fractures; ; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi; Environmental toxicology; Miljötoxikologi; Surface and colloid chemistry; Yt- och kolloidkemi; Nuclear chemistry; Kärnkemi;

    Abstract : In Sweden the encapsulated nuclear waste will be surrounded by compacted bentonite in the granitic host rock. In contact with water-bearing fractures the bentonite barrier may release montmorillonite colloids that may be further transported in groundwater. READ MORE

  5. 5. Phase transformation and surface chemistry of secondary iron minerals formed from acid mine drainage

    Author : Jörgen Jönsson; Lars Lövgren; Per Persson; Staffan Sjöberg; Douglas B Kent; Umeå universitet; []

    Abstract : The mining of sulphidic ore to extract metals such as zinc and copper produces huge quantities of waste material. The weathering and oxidation of the waste produces what is commonly known as Acid Mine Drainage (AMD), a dilute sulphuric acid rich in Fe(II) and heavy metals. READ MORE
