1. Neurorestorative strategies involving neurogenesis, neuronal precursors and stem cells in animal models of Parkinson's disease
Abstract : The general aims of the thesis is to provide evidence for neurogenesis in the adult substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc), where the dopamine-producing neurons lost in Parkinson's disease (PD) reside; to optimize methods used for detecting newborn nerve cells in adult brain regions with a low rate of neurogenesis; to explore the mechanism of nerve cell death in animal models of parkinsonism and early degenerative and restorative changes in nigral cell populations; and to develop a therapeutic approach that could translate into a future restorative disease-modifying strategy in PD. Paper I. READ MORE

2. Nitrogen cycling communities associated to roots of arable crops in relation to management : plant, intercropping and soil effects
Abstract : Management of terrestrial nitrogen (N) has been identified as a key challenge in the implementation of sustainable agricultural practices. Transformations of inorganic N are mainly performed by microbial functional guilds that regulate the retention or loss of N. READ MORE

3. Growth and Characterization of Strain-engineered Si/SiGe Heterostructures Prepared by Molecular Beam Epitaxy
Abstract : The strain introduced by lattice mismatch is a built-in characteristic in Si/SiGe heterostructures, which has significant influences on various material properties. Proper design and precise control of strain within Si/SiGe heterostructures, i.e. READ MORE

4. The Lysosomal-Mitochondrial Axis Theory of Apoptosis
Abstract : In many cases, apoptosis may be initiated by a minor lysosomal destabilization, which some time later is followed by a secondary, more pronounced, lysosomal rupture. After exposure to low concentrations of sphingosine, a lysosomotropic detergent, Jurkat and J774 cells underwenr apoptotic cell death, while cells exposed to higher concentrations of this agent showed necrosis. 5. Interference Alignment with Imperfect Channel Knowledge and Secrecy Constraints
Abstract : In this thesis, the degrees of freedom (DOF) of wireless networks are studied with imperfect channel state information at transmitters (CSIT) and/or secrecy constraints. Different interference alignment schemes are proposed to establish the DOF lower bound for a variety of wireless networks. READ MORE
