  1. 1. Uptake and fate of pathogenic microbes in the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis

    Author : Bodil Hernroth; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mytilus edulis; bivalve; immune response; lipopolysaccharide; LPS; antimicrobial peptide; gamma camera; radiolabelling; Salmonella typhimurium; sanitary safety; public health;

    Abstract : Bivalves, like the blue mussel Mytilus edulis, are filter-feeders and can therefore accumulate high numbers of microbes from the surrounding water. These shellfish are considered the main risk for bringing pathogens from domestic outlets in the sea, back to the community. READ MORE

  2. 2. Importance of blue mussels for biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in subtidal habitats

    Author : Pia Norling; Nils Kautsky; Tom Ysebaert; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; blue mussel; Mytilus spp.; ecosystem engineering; habitat-modifier; diversity; facilitation; ecosystem functioning; ecosystem services and water quality maintenance; Marine ecology; Marin ekologi; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Abstract : Blue mussels, Mytilus spp., occur on rocky and sedimentary shores worldwide where they often form dense aggregates. These assemblages change the local environment and create unique habitats. READ MORE

  3. 3. Predator-induced phenotypic plasticity in the marine mussel Mytilus edulis

    Author : Olof Reimer; Christer Brönmark; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Systems Ecology; systemekologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis I investigated whether the risk of predation can induce development of defensive traits in the blue mussel Mytilus edulis, a common species of the temperate seashores. I performed a series of field and laboratory experiments in which I exposed blue mussels to waterborne scents from its main predators, the starfish Asterias rubens, and the shore crab Carcinus maenas. 4. 4. Wave energy conversion and the marine environment : Colonization patterns and habitat dynamics

    Author : Olivia Langhamer; Anders Berglund; Jan Sundberg; Andrew Gill; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; artificial reefs; benthos; biodiversity; biofouling; colonization; environmental impact; fish; shellfish; Mytilus edulis; renewable energy; wave power; Biology; Biologi; Animal Ecology; Zooekologi;

    Abstract : A wave energy park has been established on the Swedish west coast outside Lysekil and pioneer work about its interactions with the marine environment has been conducted. So far, little is known about the effects of offshore energy installations on the marine environment, and this thesis assists in minimizing environmental risks as well as in enhancing potential positive effects on the marine environment. 5. 5. Blue Oceans with Blue Mussels - Management and planning of mussel farming in coastal ecosystems

    Author : Per Bergström; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Coastal management; Mytilus edulis; Growth; Planning; Modelling; Predict; Restoration; Mitigation; Aquaculture; Bioturbation;

    Abstract : Eutrophication is one of the largest and most serious global threats to the marine environment. The effect of eutrophication has become increasingly clear during recent time, and major economic and political efforts are being made to tackle its causes and consequences in Sweden and its surrounding seas.
