1. Surviving the ratchet : Modelling deleterious mutations in asexual populations
Abstract : One of the most unforgiving processes in nature is that of Muller's ratchet, a seemingly irreversible accumulation of deleterious mutations that all organisms have to deal with or face extinction. The most obvious way to avoid fitness collapse is recombination, though asexual populations usually do not have the luxury of recombining freely. READ MORE

3. The human diving response : effects of temperature and training
Abstract : The aim was to elucidate the cardiovascular response associated with breath-hold diving, especially the effects of temperature in its elicitation and the effects of different types of training on the human diving response (DR) and breath-holding time (BHT), and to evaluate the human DR in a mammalian perspective. A model for simulated diving by apnea and facial immersion in cold water was developed. READ MORE

4. Genetic engineering of Yarrowia lipolytica for the sustainable production of food oils
Abstract : The human population and its demand for food oils is constantly growing. However, increasing food oil production currently requires the deforestation of mostly tropical rainforests to allow the plantation of oil crops. READ MORE

5. Comparative Genomics in Diplomonads : Lifestyle Variations Revealed at Genetic Level
Abstract : As sequencing technologies advance genome studies are becoming a basic tool for studying an organism, and with more genomes available comparative genomics is maturing into a powerful tool for biological research. This thesis demonstrates the strength of a comparative genomics approach on a group of understudied eukaryotes, the diplomonads. READ MORE
