  1. 6. Comparative Genomics in Diplomonads : Lifestyle Variations Revealed at Genetic Level

    Author : Feifei Xu; Jan O. Andersson; Staffan G. Svärd; Matt Berriman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; comparative genomics; Giardia intestinalis; Spironucleus salmonicida; Trepomonas; diplomonad; intestinal parasite; free-living; sexual recombination; hydrogenosome; horizontal gene transfer; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution;

    Abstract : As sequencing technologies advance genome studies are becoming a basic tool for studying an organism, and with more genomes available comparative genomics is maturing into a powerful tool for biological research. This thesis demonstrates the strength of a comparative genomics approach on a group of understudied eukaryotes, the diplomonads. READ MORE

  2. 7. Identification and characterisation of chitin and cellulose synthases in oomycetes : New tools for biochemical studies and structure determination

    Abstract : Despite resembling ‘true’ fungi in terms of morphological features, oomycetes form a distinct eukaryotic lineage of filamentous microorganisms that belongs to the stramenopiles, a group of protists also comprising the closely-related brown algae and diatoms. Many oomycetes are devastating pathogens of plants and animals, globally causing significant economic losses in the agriculture and aquaculture industries, and posing considerable environmental damage to natural ecosystems. Abstract : Unicellular parasites of the apicomplexan phylum have a considerable effect on global health and agriculture. Two prominent examples of this phylum include malaria causing parasites of the Plasmodium genus and the widely prevalent parasite Toxoplasma gondii. READ MORE

  4. 9. All Roads Lead to the Non-Coding RNome : Evolution of Multicellularity and Host Response to Bacterial Infection

    Author : Jonas Kjellin; Fredrik Söderbom; Jonathan Chubb; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : The ability to control gene expression is fundamental for all living organisms. Therefore, a large variety of regulatory mechanisms exist in each cell which are essential for e.g. developmental processes and to quickly adapt to different cellular stresses such as infection. 5. 10. Evolutionary transitions across the tree of life : Phylogenomic case studies in environmental archaea, bacteria and eukaryotes

    Author : Max Emil Schön; Thijs J. G. Ettema; Fabien Burki; David Moreira; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : Microbes form the majority of life on Earth, but have been systematically underrepresented in historical research. The sequencing revolutions of the last two decades have completely changed the way we can study microbial genomic information, giving us the means to probe ever deeper into their evolution. READ MORE
