    Abstract : Anxiety disorders are very common and the primary feature is abnormal or inappropriate anxiety. Fear and anxiety is often mediated by the amygdala, a brain structure rich in substance P (SP) and neurokinin 1 (NK1) receptors. READ MORE

  2. 2. 11C Molecular Imaging in Focal Epilepsy

    Author : Torsten Danfors; Eva Kumlien; Jens Sörensen; Elisabeth Ronne-Engström; Juha Rinne; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; positron emission tomography; methionine; NK1; substance p; flumazenil; deprenyl; pk11195; phosphoimager; autoradiography; TBI; traumatic brain injury; iron chloride; ferrous chloride; Neurology; Neurologi; Radiology; Radiologi;

    Abstract : Epilepsy is a common neurological disease affecting 6 million people in Europe. Early prevention and accurate diagnosis and treatment are of importance to obtain seizure freedom. In this thesis new applications of carbon-11-labelled tracers in PET and autoradiographic studies were explored in focal epilepsy. READ MORE

  3. 3. Anabolic Androgenic Steroids : Effects on Neuropeptide Systems in the Rat Brain

    Author : Mathias Hallberg; Fred Nyberg; Pierre Le Grevès; James Zadina; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biological research on drug dependence; Anabolic androgenic steroids; Nandrolone decanoate; Substance P; NK1 receptor; Substance P 1-7 ; Endopeptidase; Opioids; Calcitonin gene-related peptide; Radioimmunoassay; Autoradiography; Central nervous system; Rats; Biologisk beroendeforskning; Biological research on drug dependence; Biologisk beroendeforskning;

    Abstract : Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) have been used in clinics for decades. The misuse of AAS has previously been attributed merely to sport athletes, taking AAS with intentions to increase muscle mass, enhance physical performance and to improve results in competitions. READ MORE

  4. 4. Immunoregulation in an experimental model of allergic asthma

    Author : Magnus Korsgren; Avdelningen för klinisk kemi och farmakologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; allergic asthma; macrophage migration inhibitory factor; eosinophils; gd T cells; NK1.1 T cells; natural killer cells; immunoglobulins; B cells; innate immunity; allergic airway inflammation; immediate hypersensitivity; Physiology; Fysiologi; Immunology; serology; transplantation; Immunologi; serologi;

    Abstract : In allergic asthma the immune response to antigen is inappropriate, leading to an inflammatory process in the respiratory mucosa. To further elucidate immunological mechanisms involved in the development of such inflammation, control mice and mice deficient in selected cell types or proteins, were used in experimental models of allergic asthma and anaphylaxis. 5. 5. Sensory neuropeptides and nitric oxide in nasal vascular regulation

    Author : Johan Rinder; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Sensory nerves; neuropeptides; nasal mucosa; nitric oxide; vascular regulation; acoustic rhinometry; NK1-receptors; CGRP-receptors; vanilloid receptors; capsaicin; lactic acid; exercise; a-adrenoceptor agonists; pig; human.;

    Abstract : The role of sensory neuropeptides and nitric oxide in vascular regulation was investigated in the pig nasal mucosa in vivo using arterial blood flow measurements and acoustic rhinometry for analysis of capacitance function. Moreover, the effects of heavy physical exercise, a-adrenoceptor agonists, nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibition, L-arginine, nitric oxide (NO) gas, histamine and capsaicin on nasal cavity NO levels and nasal cavity volume, were investigated in healthy subjects.
