1. Nuclear Magnetic Relaxation in Micellar Solution and Lyotropic Liquid Crystals. Tools and Applications
Abstract : Structurally, this Thesis is divided into two parts thatdescribe (i) the hardware development for NMR relaxationstudies and (ii) its applications for studies of the surfactantsystems. The developed hardware solutions allow to expand thefrequency range covered by conventional NMR spectrometers tomake NMR experiments feasible at resonance frequencies down to100 kHz. 2. Investigation of Water Mobility using Diffusion-Sensitive MRI: The Role of q-Space Imaging, High b-Values and Diffusion Time
Abstract : Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) diffusometry provides important information about molecular motion on a microscopic scale. The advantage of NMR diffusometry is its ability to characterise microstructures non-invasively. This has made the method important not only in chemistry, biochemistry and materials science, but also in medicine. READ MORE

3. Magnetic relaxation studies of self-associating and membrane proteins
Abstract : Magnetic relaxation dispersion measurements have been performed on aqueous protein solutions to study the dynamics of waters in the proton transport channel of bacteriorhodopsin and the self-association of the proteins BPTI, lysozyme and beta-lactoglobulin. The measurements have focused on the bulk relaxation rates, R1 and R2, of three water nuclei 1H, 2H and 17O that are coupled to the protein environments by exchange and therefore report on properties such as the protein tumbling and dynamics of internal waters. 4. Glycoconjugates : Solid-phase synthesis and biological applications
Abstract : Glycoconjugates are biologically important molecules with diverse functions. They consist of carbohydrates of varying size and complexity, attached to a non-sugar moiety as a lipid or a protein. Glycoconjugate structures are often very complex and their intricate biosynthetic pathways makes overexpression difficult. READ MORE

5. Tilted Foils Nuclear Spin Polarization and Measurement with Coulomb Excitation
Abstract : Developing new experimental tools is essential to expand the possibilites of probing the structure of atomic nuclei. The better the currently known properties of nuclei can be manipulated, the more information can be extracted from data collected in nuclear reaction experiments. READ MORE
