  1. 1. Islet constitutive nitric oxide synthase and nitric oxide production. Modulatory effects on insulin and glucagon secretion

    Author : Björn Åkesson; Allmänmedicin och klinisk epidemiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; pharmacognosy; Pharmacological sciences; mouse; carbachol; muscarinic agonist; cyclic nucleotides; calcium-fluxes; NOS-inhibitors; in vitro and in vivo; insulin and glucagon secretion; Nitric oxide NO ; constitutive nitric oxide synthase cNOS ; pharmacy; toxicology; Farmakologi; farmakognosi; farmaci; toxikologi; Endocrinology; secreting systems; diabetology; Endokrinologi; sekretion; diabetologi;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to elucidate the role of nitric oxide (NO) in the transduction signalling of insulin and glucagon release by stimulating or inhibiting islet endogenous NO-production as well as by using NO donors. Insulin release stimulated by L-arginine, the substrate for constitutive NO-synthase (cNOS)-catalyzed NO-production, was increased by the selective NOS-inhibitor NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) and suppressed by the intracellular NO donor hydroxylamine. 2. 2. Experimental skin flaps and nitric oxide

    Author : Örjan Gribbe; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Surgical flaps; nitric oxide; ischemia; reperfusion; nitrite; laser Doppler; transit-time ultrasound flowmetry; electron microscopy; NO donors; NOS inhibitors;

    Abstract : Surgical flaps are used in plastic surgery to reconstruct tissue defects due to trauma or cancer removal. Occasionally flaps are subjected to ischemia and reperfusion injury leading to flap failure. READ MORE

  3. 3. Neuromodulation via endocannabinoids and nitric oxide in the lamprey spinal cord

    Author : Alexandros Kyriakatos; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The overall objective of this thesis is to increase our understanding of neural networks generating locomotion. These networks called Central Pattern Generators (CPG), are localized in the spinal cord and can generate the basic locomotor pattern in the absence of sensory or supraspinal inputs. READ MORE

  4. 4. Nitric Oxide Regulation during Anti-tumor Immunotherapy

    Author : Wiaam Badn; Neurokirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; transplantation; Immunologi; serology; Immunology; Medicin människa och djur ; immunotherapy; Medicine human and vertebrates ; immunosuppression; PGE2; Nitric oxide; serologi;

    Abstract : During tumor progression a strong immunosuppression is developed and is believed to be the major reason why immunotherapy fails. This suppression is induced in response to factors produced from tumor cells, but can also be induced after immunotherapy. READ MORE

  5. 5. Sensory neuropeptides and nitric oxide in nasal vascular regulation

    Author : Johan Rinder; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Sensory nerves; neuropeptides; nasal mucosa; nitric oxide; vascular regulation; acoustic rhinometry; NK1-receptors; CGRP-receptors; vanilloid receptors; capsaicin; lactic acid; exercise; a-adrenoceptor agonists; pig; human.;

    Abstract : The role of sensory neuropeptides and nitric oxide in vascular regulation was investigated in the pig nasal mucosa in vivo using arterial blood flow measurements and acoustic rhinometry for analysis of capacitance function. Moreover, the effects of heavy physical exercise, a-adrenoceptor agonists, nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibition, L-arginine, nitric oxide (NO) gas, histamine and capsaicin on nasal cavity NO levels and nasal cavity volume, were investigated in healthy subjects.
