1. Influences of in vivo and in vitro loading on the proteoglycan synthesis of articular cartilage chondrocytes
Abstract : In this study, the biosynthesis of proteoglycans (PGs) was examined in articular cartilage of canine hip joint after long-distance running experiment and in bovine chondrocyte cultures during in vitro loading with hydrostatic pressure. In addition, new assays were developed for more sensitive quantitation of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and PGs. READ MORE

2. Extracellular Matrix Based Materials for Tissue Engineering
Abstract : The extracellular matrix is (ECM) is a network of large, structural proteins and polysaccharides, important for cellular behavior, tissue development and maintenance. Present thesis describes work exploring ECM as scaffolds for tissue engineering by manipulating cells cultured in vitro or by influencing ECM expression in vivo. READ MORE

3. Thiopurine S-methyltransferase - characterization of variants and ligand binding
Abstract : Thiopurine S-methyltransferase (TPMT) belongs to the Class I S-adenosylmethionine-dependent methyltransferase (SAM-MT) super family of structurally related proteins. Common to the members of this large protein family is the catalysis of methylation reactions using S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) as a methyl group donor, although SAM-MTs act on a wide range of different substrates and carry out numerous biologically important functions. 4. Quantum dot biomarkers for tracking endothelial progenitor cells and activated endothelium
Abstract : The development of new visualization techniques is essential in the field of bioimaging to gain deeper knowledge about various medical and biological events at the cellular and molecular levels. Quantum dots (QDs) are semiconductor nanocrystals which are opening new perspectives in biotechnology due to their powerful optical properties and high stability. READ MORE

5. Exploring the Interplay of Lipids and Membrane Proteins
Abstract : The interplay between lipids and membrane proteins is known to affect membrane protein topology and thus have significant effect (control) on their functions. In this PhD thesis, the influence of lipids on the membrane protein function was studied using three different membrane protein models. READ MORE
