1. Heterogeneous Integration of Shape Memory Alloysfor High-Performance Microvalves
Abstract : This thesis presents methods for fabricating MicroElectroMechanical System (MEMS) actuators and high-flow gas microvalves using wafer-level integration of Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) in the form of wires and sheets. The work output per volume of SMA actuators exceeds that of other microactuation mechanisms, such as electrostatic, magnetic and piezoelectric actuation, by more than an order of magnitude, making SMA actuators highly promising for applications requiring high forces and large displacements. 2. Wafer-level heterogeneous integration of MEMS actuators
Abstract : This thesis presents methods for the wafer-level integration of shape memory alloy (SMA) and electrostatic actuators to functionalize MEMS devices. The integration methods are based on heterogeneous integration, which is the integration of different materials and technologies. READ MORE

3. Electron beam powder bed fusion of Nitinol : A development from production process window towards delicate structures
Abstract : Electron beam powder bed fusion (PBF-EB) is increasingly attracting attention for manufacturing the near-net shape parts due to its incomparable merits, such as free residual stress and superior mechanical performance. Nickel Titanium (NiTi) as the most widely used functional alloy, has not been systematically explored for manufacturing using PBF-EB despite the perfect vacuum and high temperature manufacturing environment. 4. On implementation of an endodontic program : change of practice, treatment outcome and cost-effectiveness
Abstract : It is widely accepted that the uptake of research findings by practitionersis unpredictable, yet until they are adopted, advances intechnology and clinical research cannot improve health outcomesin patients. Despite extensive research there is limited knowledgeof the processes by which changes occur and ways of measuringthe effectiveness of change of practice. READ MORE

5. Reactive Sintering of Cu-Al, Ni-Al and Ni-Ti Powder Mixtures
Abstract : Intermetallic compounds are a distinct group of materials having attractive properties and wide applications. In the present work, the formation of intermetallic compounds from elemental components in Cu-Al, Ni-Al and Ni-Ti systems has been studied. Metallic powders were mixed in stoichiometric ratios corresponding to CuAl2, NiAl and NiTi. READ MORE
