  1. 1. Torn, Spun and Chopped : Various Limits of String Theory

    Author : Fredric Kristiansson; Ulf Danielsson; Per Sundell; Bo Sundborg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Theoretical physics; Theoretical physics; String theory; D-branes; Non-commutative open string theory; AdS CFT; Higher spin gauge theory; BMN; String bits; Fermion doubling; Teoretisk fysik; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : For the first time in the history of physics we stand in front of a theory that might actually serve as a unification of it all - string theory. It provides a self-consistent framework for gravity and quantum mechanics, which naturally incorporates matter and gauge interactions of the type seen in the standard model. READ MORE

  2. 2. Spin-offs from Stretching a Point : Strings, Branes and Higher Spin

    Author : Peter Rajan; Ulf Danielsson; Anton Alekseev; Esko Keski-Vakkuri; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Theoretical physics; Theoretical physics; String theory; D-branes; Higher-spin gauge theory; Matrix models; Non-commutative open string theory; Teoretisk fysik; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : String theory has proved to be a valuable theoretical laboratory for probing gravity and gauge theory in a unified framework. In this thesis some of the exciting spin-offs of string theory such as branes and higher spin are studied. After a review of the basics of string theory the four papers of the thesis are discussed. 3. 3. Strings, boundary fermions and coincident D-branes

    Author : Linus Wulff; Ulf Lindström; Fawad Hassan; Dmitri Sorokin; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; string theory; open strings; D-branes; supersymmetry; non-abelian gauge theory; tensionless strings; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : The appearance in string theory of higher-dimensional objects known as D-branes has been a source of much of the interesting developements in the subject during the past ten years. A very interesting phenomenon occurs when several of these D-branes are made to coincide: The abelian gauge theory living on each brane is enhanced to a non-abelian gauge theory living on the stack of coincident branes.
