  1. 1. Non-indigenous zooplankton : the role of predatory cladocerans and of copepods in trophic dynamics

    Author : Marc Andersen Borg; Fredrik Wulff; Markku Viitasalo; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Acartia tonsa; Bythotrephes longimanus; Cercopagis pengoi; egg production; fitness; food web changes; ingestion rates; invasive species; metabolic balance; mortality; non-indigenous zooplankton; predation impact; salinity tolerance; stable isotopes; Marine ecology; Marin ekologi; marin ekologi; Marine Ecology;

    Abstract : Human-mediated introductions of non-indigenous species now threaten to homogenize the biota of the Globe, causing huge economic and ecological damage. This thesis studies the ecological role of 3 invasive planktonic crustaceans, the omnivorous copepod Acartia tonsa (western Atlantic and Indo-Pacific) and the predatory cladocerans, Cercopagis pengoi (Ponto-Caspian) and Bythotrephes longimanus (Eurasian). 2. 2. The threat from non indigenous species - ecosystem vulnerability, global distribution and co-occurrence with other major threats

    Author : Helena Berglund; Biodiversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; threats; distribution range; isolation; endemism; invasions; invaders; vulnerability; non indigenous species; rarity; threatened species;

    Abstract : We live in a globalised world where people and goods travel large distances. Various species are brought along on these journeys, intentionally or as hitchhikers. Some of these species establish populations in regions to which they could not have spread without human assistance, and where they are considered to be non indigenous species (NIS). READ MORE

    Abstract : The increasing demand for seaweed extracts has led to the introduction of non-native seaweeds for farming purposes in many tropical regions. Such intentional introductions can lead to spread of non-native seaweeds from farming areas, which can become established in and alter the dynamics of the recipient ecosystems. READ MORE

    Abstract : Along the shores of the Northern hemisphere Fucus (Phaeophyceae) species are a prominent presence, providing substrate, shelter, and food for many species. Fucus evanescens, a non-indigenous species (NIS) in Sweden, and F. READ MORE
