  1. 1. The Heterocysts of Nostoc punctiforme : From Proteomics to Energy Transfer

    Author : Tanai Cardona; Ann Magnuson; Matthias Rögner; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nostoc punctiforme; heterocyst; photosynthesis; thylakoid; isolation; proteomics; photosystem; energy transfer; hydrogen; Biochemistry; Biokemi; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to provide a thorough characterization of the photosynthetic machinery from the heterocysts of Nostoc punctiforme strain ATCC 29133. In this thesis I describe the protocols I have optimized for the isolation of thylakoids from vegetative cells, the purification of heterocysts and the isolation of thylakoids from the purified heterocysts. Abstract : With accellerating global warming and pollution problems a change of energy regime is necessary. Solar energy offers a clean and unlimited energy source of enormous potential. Due to it’s intermittenet nature solar energy must be stored - ideally in the chemical bond of a carrier molecule. READ MORE

    Abstract : Molecular hydrogen is a potential energy carrier for the future. Nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria are a group of photosynthetic microorganisms with the inherent ability to produce molecular hydrogen via the enzyme complex nitrogenase. This hydrogen is not released, however, but is recaptured by the bacteria using an uptake hydrogenase. READ MORE

  4. 4. Development of robust cyanobacterial strains for biotechnological applications : Stress tolerance and cell-specific expression in heterocyst-forming cyanobacteria
