  1. 1. The role of nutrients for stream ecosystem function in Arctic landscapes : drivers of productivity under environmental change

    Author : Maria Myrstener; Ryan A. Sponseller; Reiner Giesler; Ann-Kristin Bergström; Tenna Riis; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nutrients; Stream; Arctic; Boreal; Primary productivity; Algae; Biofilm; Nutrient limitation; Nitrogen; Phosphorus;

    Abstract : Arctic and sub-Arctic freshwaters are currently experiencing substantial ecosystem changes due to the effects of global warming. Global warming effects on these freshwaters include increasing water temperatures, altered hydrological patterns, shifts in riparian vegetation and changes in the export of nutrients and carbon from soils. 2. 2. Productivity and carbon transfer in pelagic food webs in response to carbon, nutrients and light

    Author : Carolyn Faithfull; Ann-Kristin Bergström; Tobias Vrede; Kathryn Cottingham; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bacterial production; phytoplankton production; mesocosms; food webs; carbon; nutrients; light; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestrisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; limnologi; Limnology;

    Abstract : Some of the major problems we face today are human induced changes to the nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and carbon (C) cycles. Predicted increases in rainfall and temperature due to climate change, may also increase dissolved organic matter (DOM) inflows to freshwater ecosystems in the boreal zone. READ MORE

  3. 3. Urban wastewater systems: From disposal to reuse. A study of different systems with focus on water and nutrients flows

    Author : Justyna Czemiel Berndtsson; Avdelningen för Teknisk vattenresurslära; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Storm Water; Urban; Wastewater; Civil engineering; offshore technology; hydraulic engineering; Väg- och vattenbyggnadsteknik; soil mechanics; pollution control; Environmental technology; Miljöteknik; kontroll av utsläpp; Nutrients;

    Abstract : Urban wastewater systems are currently exposed to a major rethink dictated by new demands on resource management. It is postulated that next to providing efficient sanitation (preventing spread of pathogenic microorganisms) these systems should support resource reuse. READ MORE

  4. 4. Extraction of logging residues for bioenergy : effects of operational methods on fuel quality and biomass losses in the forest

    Author : Bengt Nilsson; Johan Bergh; Gudmund Vollbrecht; Rolf Björheden; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Forest fuel; Storage; Fraction composition; Needles; Defoliation; Moisture content; Nutrients; Nitrogen; Norway spruce; Picea abies; Skogsbränsle; Lagring; Fraktionsfördelning; Barr; Avbarrning; Fukthalt; Näringsämnen; Kväve; Gran; Picea abies; Forestry and Wood Technology; Skog och träteknik;

    Abstract : Wood products play a key role in the transformation to a more sustainable society based on renewable bio-based resources, together with the positive effects on climate mitigation by replacing fossil fuels. However, to increase the use of forest fuel in practice it is important to understand the effects of handling and storage on its quality and removal of nutrients from the forest. READ MORE

  5. 5. The Role of Picophytoplankton in Lake Food Webs

    Author : Stina Drakare; Roger I. Jones; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; picophytoplankton; competition; heterotrophic bacteria; nutrients; humic DOC; Biologi; Biology; Biologi; limnologi; Limnology;

    Abstract : Picophytoplankton were inferior competitors for inorganic phosphorus compared to heterotrophic bacteria. This may be due to the source of energy available for the heterotrophs, while cell-size was of minor importance. However, picophytoplankton were superior to large phytoplankton in the competition for nutrients at low concentrations. READ MORE
