  1. 1. Spatial Spread of Organisms : Modeling ecological and epidemiological processes

    Author : Tom Lindström; Uno Wennergren; Colleen Webb; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : Spatial kernel; Spatially explicit modeling; Disease transmission; Animal movements; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on the spread of organisms in both ecological and epidemiological contexts. In most of the studies presented, displacement is modeled with a spatial kernel function, which is characterized by scale and shape. These are measured by the net squared displacement (or kernel variance) and kurtosis, respectively. READ MORE

  2. 2. Lignocellulose Degradation by Soil Micro-organisms

    Author : Ran Bi; Gunnar Henriksson; Jerry Ståhlberg; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Lignocellulosic biomass is a sustainable resource with abundant reserves. Compared to petroleum ‐ based products, the biomass ‐ derived polymers and chemicals give better environmental profiles. A lot of research interest is focused on understanding the lignocellulose structures. READ MORE

  3. 3. Pharmaecological perspectives : Exposure studies using coastal Baltic Sea organisms

    Author : Hanna Oskarsson; Linda Kumblad; Ann-Kristin Eriksson Wiklund; Johan Eklöf; Nina Cedergreen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Pharmaceuticals; Baltic Sea; Mytilus edulis trossulus; Fucus vesiculosus; Ceramium tenuicorne; Gammarus spp.; Direct effects; Inter-specific interactions; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates the effects of pharmaceutical substances on coastal Baltic Sea organisms. Despite an increasing awareness of the occurrence of pharmaceuticals in various aquatic compartments, current knowledge of their possible effects on non-target organisms is limited. 4. 4. Uptake and toxicity of brominated flame retardants and pesticides : Studies on littoral organisms and model communities

    Author : Kerstin Gustafsson; Nils Kautsky; Kirsten Christoffersen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aquatic ecotoxicology; ecological interactions; indirect effects; model community studies; toxicity; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis, brackish and freshwater littoral model communities (microcosms) of varying size and complexity were used to study the effects of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and pesticides. The brackish water microcosms consisted of natural water, sediment and associated organisms, while the larger freshwater microcosms also contained submersed macrophytes (Elodea canadensis).
