17. Modeling the Potential for Carbon Removal in Agriculture: Integrating Farmer Perspectives
Abstract : The overarching aim of this thesis is to provide insights into the dynamic processes governing SOC stocks and to identify viable paths for agricultural systems to contribute to climate change mitigation. By integrating current scientific knowledge of carbon sequestration in agriculture with feasible agricultural applications, this work proposes local realistic strategies for enhancing soil organic carbon (SOC) and presents a quantitative assessment of their potential for CO2 removal. 18. Evaluation of local feed resources for hybrid catfish (Clarias macrocephalus x C. gariepinus) in smallholder fish farming systems in central Vietnam
Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to examine the current feeding situation for fresh water fish in Central Vietnam, to evaluate the potential nutritive value of locally available feed resources for hybrid catfish (Clarias macrocephalus x C. gariepinus) and Nile tilapia, to determine the dietary requirement of lysine for hybrid catfish, to estimate the requirements for the other essential amino acids (EAA) by using ideal protein concept, and finally to evaluate the suitability of cassava leaf meal and shrimp head meal as a partial replacement for fish meal in the diet, without or with lysine supplementation, for hybrid catfish fingerlings. 19. Effective conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services in agricultural landscapes
Abstract : Agricultural land use is a major driver of biodiversity losses and changes in ecosystem services. Thus, for the sake of both humans and wild organism per se, effective strategies that enable both agricultural production and conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services are urgently needed. 20. New potential in old varieties : Using landrace cereal to meet food production challenges
Abstract : Landrace cereals – historical varieties characterised by high genetic diversity – have long been considered obsolete, and have almost completely been replaced by high yielding but high input-dependent cultivars. However, the need for increased multifunctional and low-input farming, and for finding varieties that can be robust to environmental stresses, has meant that these old varieties have been revalued.
