  1. 6. Strategic nitrogen management in stockless organic cropping systems : redistribution of residual biomass for improved energy and nitrogen balance

    Author : Tora Råberg; RISE; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; bioenergy; biomass management; crop rotation; ecological intensification; green manure; life cycle assessment; nitrogen cycling; organic agriculture; soil incubation; stockless cropping systems;

    Abstract : A griculture faces the challenge of producing high yields to feed a growing world population, while simultaneously addressing environmental problems such as eutrophication, emissions of greenhouse gases, loss of biodiversity and soil degradation. Organic farming can be part of the solution, as it promotes biodiversity, uses less energy for fertiliser production and often has higher inputs of organic matter to soil than conventional farming. 2. 7. On the importance of farmland as stopover habitat for migrating birds

    Author : Juliana Dänhardt; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; conservation; bird migration; agriculture; stopover ecology; Golden plover; Pluvialis apricaria; landscape heterogeneity; organic farming; food availability; earthworms;

    Abstract : Agricultural intensification has led to dramatic population declines among many farmland bird species. Negative effects of intensive farming in terms of decreased local habitat quality or structural simplification of farmland landscapes have reduced both reproductive outcome and winter survival of many species. 3. 8. Ecology of nematophagous fungi in agricultural soils

    Author : Lotta Persmark; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Organic farming; Fungistasis; Competition; Bacteria; Conidial traps; Rhizosphere; Seasonal variation; Distribution; Endoparasitic; Nematode; Nematode-trapping; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Abstract : Nematophagous fungi possess various mechanisms for infecting nematodes, and are either obligate parasites or facultative saprophytes. Nematophagous fungi have a potential as biological control agents against plant- and animal-parasitic nematodes. READ MORE

  4. 9. Food for Thought : Essays on Green Public Procurement and the Market for Organic Food

    Author : Hanna Lindström; Sofia Lundberg; Tommy Lundgren; Janne Tukiainen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Organic food policy; agricultural policy; Green Public Procurement; environmental policy; consumer demand; demand system; price transmission; survey data; retail scanner data;

    Abstract : Paper [I] In this paper, we study a Green Public Procurement (GPP) policy decided by the Swedish government in 2006, stating objectives related to organic farming. The policy aims to increase the public sector's organic food purchases, in order to incentivise Swedish farmers to convert to organic practices, thereby contributing to national environmental quality objectives. 5. 10. Plant-based biogas production for improved nutrient management of beetroot in stockless organic farming

    Author : Anita Gunnarsson; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Transition from a nutrient management system based on green manure (GrM system) to one based on biodigested plant material produced within the crop rotation (BG system) was investigated in crop sequences including clover-grass, beetroot and cereals. The overall hypothesis was that transition would improve nitrogen (N) availability. READ MORE
