16. Flow over rough surfaces, and conjugate heat transfer, in engineering applications
Abstract : This thesis focuses on two important topics in the field of fluid mechanics and heat transfer that were treated separately. On the one hand, the flow over rough surfaces, which is not yet completely understood, despite of the fact that it has an important implication in many engineering applications, especially in the naval industry for ships and boats because the friction drag caused by fouling, antifouling coatings and roughness in general impacts the fuel consumption and toxic emissions to the atmosphere. 17. Washing Machine Design Optimization Based on Dynamics Modeling
Abstract : The spinning process in a washing machine is a source of undesired vibrations and noise and may cause discomfort both to the user as well as for the machine itself due to vibrations which have impact on system lifetime, reliability of operation and capacity. The aim of this thesis is to develop mathematical and computational models of a washing machine of modern type and use these models for dynamics analysis and in optimization routines to make improvements of the machine mechanical design. 18. Thermal impact on rolling contact fatigue of railway wheels
Abstract : Rolling contact fatigue (RCF) is a very common and costly damage mechanism for rails and wheels. This thesis investigates the influence of combined thermal and mechanical loading on RCF of railway wheels on the basis of numerical predictions. READ MORE

19. Fatigue improvement of steel bridges with high-frequency mechanical impact treatment
Abstract : This thesis investigates the performance of fatigue-improved welds with high-frequency mechanical impact (HFMI) for application on new bridges. Fatigue strength improvement with HFMI can enable lightweight design of bridges and allow the utilisation of the benefits of high-strength steels. READ MORE

20. Indirect System Identification for Unknown Input Problems : With Applications to Ships
Abstract : System identification is used in engineering sciences to build mathematical models from data. A common issue in system identification problems is that the true inputs to the system are not fully known. In this thesis, existing approaches to unknown input problems are classified and some of their properties are analyzed. READ MORE
