1. Biogeochemical evidences of human intervention in a shallow lake, Zeekoevlei, South Africa
Abstract : This thesis describes a multi-parameter biogeochemical investigation in a shallow hyper-eutrophic freshwater coastal lake, Zeekoevlei, in South Africa. The predominance of autochthonous algal-derived organic matter in lake sediments is indicated by low C/N, high H/C ratios and δ13Corganic values. READ MORE

2. Increasing Energy Efficiency in Electric Trains Operation : Driver Advisory Systems and Energy Storage
Abstract : Electric traction is the most efficient traction system in the railway transportation. However, due to the expensive infrastructure and high power demand from the grid, the share of electric trains in the railway transportation is still lower than other trains. READ MORE

3. On thermodynamic and kinetic constraints in autotrophic metabolism
Abstract : Earth has entered a new geological epoch, the Anthropocene, defined by humanity’s impact on the environment with increased emissions of CO2 due to burning of fossil resource as a major contributor. To ensure a sustainable future, humanity has to move towards a circular economy, where released CO2 is re-captured and turned into resources. READ MORE

4. Techno-economic analysis and optimization of electrochemical energy storage solutions
Abstract : The need to integrate the rapidly growing share of variable renewable energy sources in the power sector requires solutions that are capable of mitigating the intermittent nature of these sources. They are expected to constitute the backbone of the electricity generation system in the coming years in order to reach ambitious goals in terms of energy security and reduction of environmental impact. 5. (Dis)engaging in moving-body practices : physical activity correlates among university students in Mexico
Abstract : The aim of this study was to gather in-depth data to provide insights into individual, social and environmental correlates of physical activity in order to identify priority elements to design feasible and effective intervention strategies to promote regular physical activity engagement among university students in a middle-income country such as Mexico. The situation of university students (dis)engaging in moving-body practices was explored through the use of a survey based on the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire and the construction of Moving-body diaries that included visual and verbal narratives.
