  1. 1. The acquisition of contrast : a longitudinal investigation of initial s+plosive cluster development in Swedish children

    Author : Fredrik Karlsson; Kirk P. H. Sullivan; Peter E. Czigler; Marilyn M. Vihman; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; phonological contrast; speech development; place and manner of articulation; aspiration; structural complexity; acoustic cues; homonym production; Phonetics; Fonetik;

    Abstract : This Thesis explores the development of word-initial s+plosive consonant clusters in the speech of Swedish children between the ages of 1;6 and 4;6. Development in the word-initial consonant clusters is viewed as being determined by 1) the children’s ability to articulate the target sequence of consonants, 2) the level of understanding of which acoustic features in the adult model production are significant for the signalling of the intended distinction, and 3) the children’s ability to apply established production patterns only to productions where the acquired feature agrees with the adult target, to achieve a contrast between rival output forms. 2. 2. Effects of early probiotic supplementation in a pediatric setting : Focus on body composition, metabolism and inflammation

    Author : Frida Karlsson Videhult; Christina E West; Olle Hernell; Inger Öhlund; Velmurugesan Arulampalam; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Lactobacillus paracasei ssp. paracasei F19; infants; children; growth; body composition; metabolism; follow-up; Pediatrics; pediatrik;

    Abstract : We aimed to determine the short- and long-term effects on growth, body composition, metabolic and inflammatory markers following supplementation with the probiotic Lactobacillus paracasei ssp. paracasei F19 (LF19) during weaning. READ MORE

  3. 3. Defining Integrated Science Education and Putting It to Test

    Author : Maria Åström; Karl-Göran Karlsson; Lars Ove Dahlgren; Ulf P. Lundgren; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Science education; international studies; PISA; curriculum integration; Subject didactics; Ämnesdidaktik; didactics of natural science;

    Abstract : The thesis is made up by four studies, on the comprehensive theme of integrated and subjectspecific science education in Swedish compulsory school. A literature study on the matter is followed by an expert survey, then a case study and ending with two analyses of students’ science results from PISA 2003 and PISA 2006. READ MORE

  4. 4. Synthesis, conformational analysis, and biological evaluation of peptides from E. coli P pilus proteins

    Author : Katarina Flemmer Karlsson; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NMR spectroscopy; CD spectroscopy; peptide structure; ELISA; solid-phase peptide synthesis; peptide; P pili; chaperone; Organic chemistry; Organisk kemi;

    Abstract : Many bacteria utilize hairlike protein appendages (pili) to attach themselves to mucosal cell surfaces in the host organism. The pilus is assembled from protein subunits synthesized inside the bacteria and transported to the outer cell wall for incorporation into the growing pilus. READ MORE

  5. 5. Monoglyceride Lipase and Hormone-Sensitive Lipase - Molecular and structural aspects

    Author : Marie Karlsson; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; genomic organisation; baculovirus-insect cells; catalytic triad; alfa beta hydrolase fold; tissue distribution; cDNA sequence; lipolysis; adipocyte; monoglyceride lipase; hormone-sensitive lipase; chromosomal localisation; Clinical biology; Klinisk biologi;

    Abstract : Triglycerides in the adipocyte are hydrolysed by means of three consecutive reactions through the combined action of two lipases: hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) and monoglyceride lipase (MGL). HSL catalyses the first and rate-limiting step, i.e. READ MORE
