1. Innovative Bioreactors for the Degradation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons
Abstract : The development of biological reactors for the treatment of toxic and recalcitrant organic pollutants is a complex task. Firstly, microbial inoculation, acclimation and selection must be optimized to provide the best microflora possible. READ MORE

2. Protein unfolding by interfaces and interactions between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
Abstract : In order to theoretically study large and complex systems, a variety of approaches that can be categorized loosely as top-down or bottom-up are followed. While our vision is to bridge the gap between these approaches and use them together in multiscale materials modeling, the present thesis is limited to give examples of each type of approach in the study of soft-matter systems. 3. Bioactivation and binding of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in blood vessel endothelia
Abstract : Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread environmental pollutants formed by incomplete combustion of organic materials such as fossil fuels and wood. Experimental and epidemiological studies indicate that PAHs may be involved in the development of cardiovascular disease. READ MORE

4. Ionization and Fragmentation of Complex Molecules and Clusters : Biomolecules and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons
Abstract : This work deals with ionization and fragmentation of biomolecules and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules. They are studied in the gas phase both as isolated molecules and as weakly bound clusters. READ MORE

5. New methods for determination of airborne pollutants : Focus on tetrabromobisphenol A, organophosphate triesters and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
Abstract : The work presented in this thesis concerns the development and evaluation of new methods of sampling and analysis of organic pollutants in the indoor and outdoor environment. In Paper I, the development of a new method was reported for the determination of the brominated flame retardant tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) in air using sampling with glass fiber filter and polyurethane foam (PUF), ultrasonic solvent extraction and liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (LC-ESI/MS).
