  1. 1. Titrating Open Lung PEEP in Acute Lung Injury : A clinical method based on changes in dynamic compliance

    Author : Fernando Suarez Sipmann; Göran Hedenstierna; Hans Hedenström; Stefan Lundin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; PEEP; open lung; recruitment; dead space; electrical impedance tomography; ARDS.; Medicine; Medicin;

    Abstract : The recognition that supportive mechanical ventilation can also damage the lung, the so called ventilation induced lung injury (VILI), has revived the more than 40 year long debate on the optimal level of PEEP to be used. It is established that the prevention of VILI improves patient outcome and that PEEP exerts protective effects by preventing unstable diseased alveoli from collapsing. READ MORE

  2. 2. Recruitment of small size lungs - experimental studies

    Author : Angela Hanson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; lung recruitment; PEEP titration; VTCO2; Cdyn; computed tomography; cardiac output; atelectasis; lung aeration; driving pressure;

    Abstract : Background: Patients - both children and adults - undergoing anesthesia and mechanical ventilation rapidly develop atelectasis. Even more severe problems occur in patients with acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome. READ MORE

  3. 3. Optimizing mechanical ventilation in extremely preterm infants

    Author : Linda Wallström; Richard Sindelar; Anders Jonzon; Raffaele Dellaca'; Heikki Lukkarinen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Mechanical ventilation; extremely preterm infant; forced oscillation technique; volume targeted ventilation; proportional assist ventilation; phrenic nerve activity; electrical activity of the diaphragm; Pediatrik; Pediatrics;

    Abstract : Extremely low gestational age newborns (ELGANs) i.e. infants born before 28 weeks of gestational age (GA), require respiratory support during their hospital stay, and a majority needs mechanical ventilation (MV) at some time point. READ MORE
