1. The role of PKC in neuronal differentiation and in regulation of the actin cytoskeleton during neurite outgrowth
Abstract : Protein kinase C (PKC) is a family of serine/threonine kinases subgrouped into classical (α, βI, βII, γ), novel (δ, ε, η, θ) and atypical (ζ, ι/λ) isoforms. PKC can be activated by phorbol esters, and prolonged treatment of neuroblastoma cells has been shown to induce neuronal differentiation with neurite outgrowth and increased expression of neuronal genes. 2. The expression and function of protein kinase C isoforms in differentiating neuroblastoma cells
Abstract : The human neuroblastoma cell line SH-SY5Y can be induced to differentiate into a neuronal sympathetic phenotype after treatment with 16 nM 12-O-tetradecanoyl phorbol 13-acetate (TPA) in serum, or by a combination of the growth factors basic fibroblast growth factor and insulin-like growth factor-I (bFGF/IGF-I). SH-SY5Y cells stably transfected with TrkA, the nerve growth factor (NGF) receptor, differentiate in response to NGF. READ MORE

3. Effects of ethanol on muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in nerve cells
Abstract : This thesis focused on the mechanisms involved in the effects of long-term ethanol treatment on mAChRs and their coupled-signal transduction pathway in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells. All 5 subtypes of mAChRs were expressed in these cells. READ MORE

4. Teratogenicity Involved in Experimental Diabetic Pregnancy
Abstract : Maternal diabetes is associated with increased risk of growth disturbances and congenital malformations. The malformations rate in the offspring of diabetic mothers is 2-3 fold higher compared to infants of nondiabetic mothers. READ MORE

5. Regeneration of Peripheral Nerves. The role of protein kinases, with emphasis on neurotrophic factor stimulation
Abstract : The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of protein kinases in peripheral nerve regeneration, with the use of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and nodose ganglia explants from adult mice. The effects of neurotrophic factor stimulation and protein kinase inhibition were studied for long (days) and short term (minutes) effects. READ MORE
