1. Osteoarthritis of the Hip and Uncemented Total Hip Arthroplasty : Effects of Immediate Weight Bearing on Implant Stability, Bone Mineral Density, and Body Composition
Abstract : The initial recommendation for the postoperative regime after uncemented total hip arthroplasty (THA) was 6-12 weeks of partial weight bearing (PWB) to obtain a stable implant position during bone ingrowth. In recent years patients with uncemented THA have increasingly practiced full weight bearing (FWB) after surgery, which has largely been based on clinical experience rather than on scientific evidence. 2. Intracranial facial nerve lesion : experimental study on neural degeneration and its treatment
Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to develop an experimental model that would generate extensive motor neuronal degeneration in adult rats, and furthermore to study mechanisms causing nerve cell death and effects of putative neuroprotective compounds. The facial nerve was chosen because it is well characterized and allows evaluation of functional recovery by analyzing vibrissae movements. READ MORE

3. Pulse-modulated feedback in mathematical modeling and estimation of endocrine systems
Abstract : The research field of systems biology has gained a lot of interest during the last decades. Systems biology can be seen as the systematic study of complex interactions in biological systems, mainly by methods from dynamical systems theory. READ MORE

4. Continuously Variable Split-Power Transmissions with Several Modes
Abstract : A continuously variable transmission (CVT) of split-power design consists of a variator and an arrangement of planetary gears. A black box model describing such transmissions is presented. The model can be used for synthesis as well as loss-free analysis of split-power CVT concepts in general. READ MORE

5. Modeling and identification of nonlinear and impulsive systems
Abstract : Mathematical modeling of dynamical systems plays a central roll in science and engineering. This thesis is concerned with the process of finding a mathematical model, and it is divided into two parts - one that concentrates on nonlinear system identification and another one where an impulsive model of testosterone regulation is constructed and analyzed.
