  1. 21. Surface Modifications for Biointerfaces - Supported Lipid Bilayers and some Aspects of Microcontact Printing

    Author : Karin Glasmästar; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; QCM-D; PDMS; cell attachment; supported lipid bilayer; microcontact printing; SPR; ToF-SIMS; protein adsorption; formation kinetics; XPS;

    Abstract : Biointerfaces engage several disciplines: physics, materials science, chemistry, biology and medicine. They are found on the surfaces of implants, tubes and tanks in the food industry or on the hull of a boat. In this work, model surfaces aimed for contact with biological systems were studied. 2. 22. Physico-Chemical Investigations of, and Characterization of Model Membranes for, Lipid-Peptide Interactions

    Author : Per Wessman; Katarina Edwards; Martin Malmsten; Michel Lafleur; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi; Physical Chemistry; fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : The main focus of this thesis is on the effects caused by α-helical peptides on liposome structure, the impact of cholesterol on the peptide-membrane interactions, and the effect of aggregate curvature on the peptide affinity. Results of the studies show that the membrane destabilizing effect of the cationic α-helical peptide melittin is modulated by cholesterol. READ MORE

  3. 23. Computer Simulations of Membrane–Sugar Interactions

    Author : Jon Kapla; Arnold Maliniak; Alexander Lyubartsev; Ilpo Vattulainen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular simulations; Molecular dynamics; Lipid bilayers; Carbohydrates; Biological membranes; Trehalose; Glycolipids; Membrane—sugar interactions; fysikalisk kemi; Physical Chemistry;

    Abstract : Carbohydrate molecules are essential parts of living cells. They are used as energy storage and signal substances, and they can be found incorporated in the cell membranes as attachments to glycoproteins and glycolipids, but also as free molecules. READ MORE

  4. 24. Biophysical studies of membrane associated peptides

    Author : Jesper Lind; Astrid Gräslund; Lena Mäler; Christian Griesinger; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NMR; spectroscopy; membrane interaction; bicelles; Chemistry; Kemi; Biophysics; biofysik;

    Abstract : A large part of the processes in living organisms involves proteins acting in a biological membrane. Biophysical studies on isolated model systems can give important understandings of the complicated biological mechanisms in the membrane. In this thesis peptide membrane interaction mechanisms are studied in several different systems. READ MORE

  5. 25. Phosphorylated Monomolecular Layers : Design, Synthesis, Characterization and Application

    Author : Johan Ekeroth; Karin Caldwell; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : This thesis describes the design, synthesis and characterization of organo-phosphatemonomolecular layers, so called self-assembled monolayers, using the strategy of linking organosulfur substances to a gold surface. Moreover there is also a paper included, which describes the development of synthetic pathways to various phospholipids, for which I have developed an interest in later projects. READ MORE
