  1. 16. Phenomenology of neutrino properties, unification, and Higgs couplings beyond the Standard Model

    Author : Stella Riad; Tommy Ohlsson; Nuria Rius; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Effective field theories; neutrino physics; extra dimensions; universal extra dimensions; Higgs physics; renormalization group running; Bayesian statistics; grand unified theories; Fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : The vast majority of experiments in particle physics can be described by the Standard Model of particle physics (SM). However, there are indications for physics beyond it. The only experimentally demonstrated problem of the model is the difficulty to describe neutrino masses and leptonic mixing. READ MORE

  2. 17. Calibration of the ATLAS calorimeters and discovery potential for massive top quark resonances at the LHC

    Author : Elin Bergeås Kuutmann; Jörgen Sjölin; Kerstin Jon-And; Sten Hellman; Hans Bøggild; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; particle physics; the ATLAS experiment; the Large Hadron Collider; calorimeter; calorimetry; hadronic calibration; top quark; top quark pair resonances; search for physics beyond the Standard Model; Elementary particle physics; Elementarpartikelfysik; Physics; Fysik; fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : ATLAS is a multi-purpose detector which has recently started to take data at the LHC at CERN. This thesis describes the tests and calibrations of the central calorimeters of ATLAS and outlines a search for heavy top quark pair resonances. READ MORE

  3. 18. Solving the quantum scattering problem for systems of two and three charged particles

    Author : Mikhail Volkov; Nils Elander; William McCurdy; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Scattering theory; three body scattering; Atomic and molecular physics; Atom- och molekylfysik; Mathematical physics; Matematisk fysik; fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : A rigorous formalism for solving the Coulomb scattering problem is presented in this thesis. The approach is based on splitting the interaction potential into a finite-range part and a long-range tail part. In this representation the scattering problem can be reformulated to one which is suitable for applying exterior complex scaling. READ MORE

  4. 19. Search for Charginos and Sleptons in ATLAS and Identification of Pile-up with the Tile Calorimeter

    Author : Pawel Klimek; Christophe Clément; Barbro Åsman; Freya Blekman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ATLAS experiment; particle physics; high energy physics; supersymmetry; SUSY; beyond standard model; chargino; neutralino; slepton; vector boson fusion; VBF; Tile calorimeter; TileCal; pile-up; quality factor; Large Hadron Collider; LHC; CERN; fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : The standard model of particle physics (SM) describes the elementary particles and their interactions. Supersymmetry (SUSY), a symmetry beyond those included in the standard model could resolve some of the SM shortcomings. It can provide a candidate for Dark Matter and a solution to the hierarchy problem. READ MORE

  5. 20. Fusion Plasma Observations at JET with the TOFOR Neutron Spectrometer : Instrumental Challenges and Physics Results

    Author : Maria Gatu Johnson; Matthias Weiszflog; Luciano Bertalot; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fusion; Plasma diagnostics; Neutron Spectrometry; TOFOR; JET; ITER; time-of-flight; plasma heating; Nuclear physics; Kärnfysik; Applied Nuclear Physics; Tillämpad kärnfysik;

    Abstract : The neutron spectrometer TOFOR was installed at JET in 2005 for high-rate observation of neutrons from reactions between two deuterium (D) ions. Neutron spectrometry as a fusion plasma diagnostic technique is invoked to obtain information about the velocity states of fusion fuel ions. READ MORE
