  1. 6. Accidental hypothermia and local cold injury : physiological and epidemiological studies on risk

    Author : Helge Brändström; Michael Haney; Urban Wiklund; Anders Eriksson; Karl-Axel Ängquist; Ola Winsö; Sigridur Kalman; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cold-related injuries; hypothermia; frostbite; cold adaptation; rewarming; autonomic nervous system; heart rate variability;

    Abstract : Background: (Papers I and II) The objectives were to first determine incidence and contributing factors to cold-related injuries in northern Sweden, both those that led to hospitalization and those that led to fatality.  (Papers III and IV) A further aim was to assess post-cooling hand-rewarming responses and effects of training in a cold environment, both on fingertip rewarming and on function of the autonomic nervous system, to evaluate if there was adaptation related to prolonged occupational cold exposure. 2. 7. Studies in Physiological Optics and Microwave Hyperthermia

    Author : Claes M. E. Beckman; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; optics; cancer treatment; light scattering;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with the optics of the eye, the sky and microwave induced hyperthermia treatment of cancer. Light scattering in normal eyes is reviewed and its influence on vision is discussed in some detail. READ MORE

  3. 8. Oesophageal Resection with Gastric Tube Reconstruction - A clinical study of a surgical method and its consequences on the upper gastrointestinal tract and survival

    Author : Jan Johansson; Lund Kirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Surgery; Barrett s oesophagus; Survival; Age; Follow-up studies; Physiological studies; Anastomoses; Oesophagectomy; Oesophageal neoplasms; traumatologi; Kirurgi; ortopedi; traumatology; orthopaedics;

    Abstract : In a prospective randomised study following oesophagectomy and gastric tube reconstruction patients with hand-sutured neck anastomoses were compared with patients with circular stapled chest anastomoses. The two groups had equal rates of anastomotic or conduit leaks of 7.3 % (3/41) and 7.1 % (3/42) and of benign anastomotic strictures of 19. READ MORE

  4. 9. A multi-disciplinary approach to studying performance among high-level golfers : physiological and biomechanical aspects

    Author : James Parker; Charlotte M. Olsson; Toni Arndt; Högskolan i Halmstad; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Carry distance; clubhead speed; driver performance; golf kinematics; sports performance; strength training; isokinetic training;

    Abstract : In competitive golf, the player’s ability to hit the ball a long distance affects the score in a positive way. Swing kinematics is considered an important factor in driver performance; one way of improving swing kinematics is through strength and power training. READ MORE

  5. 10. Studies on Phosphohistidine Phosphatase 1 : What? Where? Why?

    Author : Ulla Beckman Sundh; Pia Ek; Örjan Zetterqvist; Jin-ping Li; Christian Hedberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; PHPT1; Phosphohistidine phosphatase; PHP; Assay; Medical Biochemistry; Medicinsk biokemi;

    Abstract : Phosphohistidine phosphatase 1 (PHPT1) is a small protein, consisting of 125 amino acids, that catalyzes the dephosphorylation of histidine but does not have any activity towards other phosphorylated amino acids. PHPT1 was identified in 2002, and is so far the only mammalian histidine phosphatase known, but still little is known about its physiological role. READ MORE
