  1. 1. Electrostatic Interactions in Complex Liquids : A Thermodynamic Analysis Based on the Poisson-Boltzmann Equation and the Flexible Surface Model

    Author : Ingemar Carlsson; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; AOT; AerosolOT; ionic surfactant; spontaneous curvature; bending modulus; bending energy; Helfrich curvature energy; fluid membrane; complex liquid; flexible surface model; micelle; counterion; Poisson-Boltzmann equation; cell model; L3 phase; sponge phas; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : The aim of this study was to analyse physico-chemical properties of some complex liquids using the Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) cell model; to extend the theory to cover bilayer systems with complex global geometry; finally to apply this new extended model to such bilayer systems. The PB cell model provides a practical tool to examine counterion association and phase behaviour for structures of simple geometries; cylindrical and spherical. READ MORE

  2. 2. Diffusion studies in gels using holographic laser interferometry

    Author : Charlotte Mattisson; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; chemical potential; ionic strenght; pH; cubic phase; partition coefficient; holographic laser interferometry; holography; pullulan; lysozyme; BSA; macromolecules; diffusion; gel; Poisson-Boltzmann; Chemical technology and engineering; Kemiteknik och kemisk teknologi;

    Abstract : This thesis is an investigation of the potential of holographic laser interferometry for the study of diffusion of both small solutes and macromolecules. An investigation on the importance of errors due to light deflection in refarctive index gradients showed that the magnitude of the refractive index gradients were negligible for the system investigated. 3. 3. Polymer effects on microemulsions and lamellar phases

    Author : Håkan Bagger-Jörgensen; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Poisson-Boltzmann equation; hard sphere; osmometry; small angle scattering; phase behaviour; hydrophobically modified polyelectrolyte; hydrophobically modified polymer; nonionic surfactant; microemulsion; lamellar phase; undulation force; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : The main part of this thesis deals with the effects of adsorbing and non-adsorbing polymers when mixed with microemulsion droplets and bilayers in a lamellar phase. The phase behaviour, microstructure and interactions in a nonionic surfactant/ water/ oil-system, comprising penta ethylene oxide dodecyl ether (C12E5) and decane, was investigated. READ MORE

  4. 4. On Lorentz Invariance, Regularity and Global Existence for Kinetic Equations

    Author : Håkan Andreasson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : [A1] Regularity of the gain term and strong L1 convergence to equilibrium for the relativistic Boltzmann equation. The main purpose of the paper is to show that the gain term of the relativistic collision operator is regularizing. This is a generalization of P.L. READ MORE

  5. 5. High order trapezoidal rule-based quadratures for boundary integral methods on non-parametrized surfaces

    Author : Federico Izzo; Olof Runborg; Robert Krasny; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Matematik; Mathematics;

    Abstract : This thesis is concerned with computational methods for solving boundary integral equations (BIE) on surfaces defined without explicit parametrization, called Implicit Boundary Integral Methods (IBIM). Using implicit methods for describing surfaces, such as the level-set method, can be advantageous for complex geometries and problems where the surface evolves over time. READ MORE
