  1. 1. Mesospheric measurements using microwave spectroscopy

    Author : Ole Martin Christensen; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; water vapour; microwave spectroscopy; polar mesospheric clouds; remote sensing; mesosphere; retrieval; carbon monoxide; temperature; ozone; noctilucent clouds;

    Abstract : The mesosphere is an altitude region of the atmosphere, covering altitudes between about 50 km to 100 km. Improved understanding of this area of the atmosphere offers possibilities of increasing the accuracy of weather forecast and climate models. READ MORE

  2. 2. Tomographic views of the middle atmosphere from a satellite platform

    Author : Kristoffer Hultgren; Jörg Gumbel; Christian von Savigny; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Atmosphere; Mesosphere; Noctilucent Clouds; Polar Mesospheric Clouds; Tomography; Remote sensing; Odin; OSIRIS; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Abstract : The middle atmosphere is a very important part of the Earth system. Until recently, we did not realize the importance of the structure of this vaporous shell and of the fundamental role it plays in both creating and sustaining life on the planet. READ MORE

  3. 3. Investigation of Polar Mesosphere Summer Echoes in Northern Scandinavia

    Author : Victoria Barabash; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physics; Polar Mesosphere Summer Echoes; middle atmospheric dynamics; ionospheric disturbances; solar radiation; aerosol; MST radar; planetary waves; noctilucent clouds; Fysik; Physics; Fysik; rymdfysik; Space Physics;

    Abstract : This PhD thesis deals with phenomena which are closely related to the unique thermal structure of the polar summer mesosphere, namely Polar Mesosphere Summer Echoes (PMSE). PMSE are strong radar echoes commonly observed by VHF MST radars from thin layers in the 80-90 km altitude interval at high latitudes during summer. READ MORE

  4. 4. Multi-satellite views on mesospheric microphysics and dynamics

    Author : Lina Broman; Jörg Gumbel; Susanne Benze; Scott Bailey; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; polar mesospheric clouds; satellite tomography; remote sensing; cloud microphysics; wave dynamics; mesosphere; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Abstract : Atmospheric gravity waves of different scales and origins strongly modulate the wind field and temperature structure of the higher parts of the atmosphere. Direct and continuous measurements of these processes are particularly complicated in the mesosphere at about 50 to 100 km height due to the remote location of this region. READ MORE

  5. 5. Rocket-borne in situ measurements in the middle atmosphere

    Author : Jonas Hedin; Jörg Gumbel; Markus Rapp; Ove Havnes; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : rocket measurements; noctilucent clouds; meteoric smoke; nightglow; mesosphere; aerodynamics; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; atmosfärvetenskap; Atmospheric Sciences;

    Abstract : The Earth's mesosphere and lower thermosphere in the altitude range 50-130 km is a fascinating part of our atmosphere. Complex interactions between radiative, dynamical, microphysical and chemical processes give rise to several prominent phenomena, many of those centred around the mesopause region (80-100 km).
