  1. 1. Applying the Pump and Leak Hypothesis. An experimental and theoretical investigation of the principles of ion regulation and excitability in the crustacean stretch receptor neuron

    Author : Sten Theander; Människan i rörelse: hälsa och rehabilitering; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurology; neuropsychology; lobster; stretch receptor neuron; leak current; Q-current; K-Cl cotransporter; A-current; mathematical model; excitability; GABA channel; neurophysiology; ion regulation; neuropsykologi; Neurologi; neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : An invertebrate nerve cell preparation, the lobster stretch receptor neuron, was investigated with respect to maintenance of its resting voltage, intracellular ion concentrations and excitability using voltage clamp technique and ion-selective microelectrodes. It was found that the resting voltage (-65 mV) of microelectrode impaled cells is caused by (a) a homogenous population of K+ channels which we denoted as leak channels (b) an electrogenic and voltage-dependent Na-K pump current and (c) an inward microelectrode-induced "impalement" current carried mainly by Na+. 2. 2. Magnetic Properties of Epitaxial Metal/Oxide Heterostructures

    Author : Tobias Warnatz; Björgvin Hjörvarsson; Fridrik Magnus; Vassilios Kapaklis; Stuart S.P. Parkin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fe MgO; interlayer exchange coupling; anisotropy; IEC; superlattice; multilayer; polarized neutron reflectometry; PNR; Physics with spec. in Atomic; Molecular and Condensed Matter Physics; Fysik med inriktning mot atom- molekyl- och kondenserande materiens fysik;

    Abstract : The work in this dissertation is devoted to tailoring and studying magnetic properties of epitaxial metal/oxide heterostructures. The aim is to understand the fundamental principles governing these properties and how they affect each other. The acquired knowledge can prove useful for the development of future spintronic devices. READ MORE

  3. 3. Theoretical Studies of Electron Transport in Quantum Dot Structures

    Author : Carina Fasth; Fasta tillståndets fysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : We calculate the phase property of the reflection coefficient in two-terminal structures using a lattice tight-binding model. It is seen that, provided that there exist two coherent reflection paths, the reflection probability can be zero for certain electron energies. READ MORE

  4. 4. Transport in mesoscopic superconducting devices

    Author : Kevin Marc Seja; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; superconductivity; quasiclassical theory; mesoscopic physics; nonequilibrium superconductivity; Andreev bound states; superconducting spintronics;

    Abstract : A field of growing interest within the last few decades is the study of superconductivity in mesoscopic-scale heterostructures. Mesoscopic refers to sizes between the atomic and macroscopic scales. READ MORE

  5. 5. Tailored Properties of Ferromagnetic Thin Films

    Author : Peter Warnicke; Peter Svedlindh; Peter Grünberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; micromagnetics; domain wall; vortex; pinning potential; nanowire; spin dynamics; spin transfer torque; magnetic anisotropy; MFM; Permalloy; PMA; magnetic multilayer; Curie temperature; DMS; GaMnAs; magnetic bioseparation; Engineering physics; Teknisk fysik;

    Abstract : Magnetic thin films and patterned nanostructures have been studied with respect to their magnetic properties using SQUID-magnetometry, magnetic force microscopy, electrical measurements, and micromagnetic calculations. Properties of vortex domain walls, trapped in Permalloy nanowires with artificial constrictions, were investigated experimentally and by numerical calculations. READ MORE
