  1. 1. Genetic Predisposition to Sporadic and Familial Multiple Myeloma

    Author : Britt-Marie Halvarsson; Avdelningen för hematologi och transfusionsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; multiple myeloma; genetics; inherited predisposition; familial multiple myeloma; GWAS; polygenic risk score;

    Abstract : Multiple Myeloma (MM) is the second most common hematological malignancy. It is defined by an uncontrolled growth of plasma cells, usually in the bone marrow. Clinically it is complicated by hypercalcemia, renal failure, anaemia, and bone pain. READ MORE

  2. 2. Cancer risk and predisposition in families with childhood cancer

    Author : Karl-Johan Stjernfelt; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cancer; Pediatric; Childhood Cancer; Heredity; Genetics; predisposition; Familial cancer;

    Abstract : BACKGROUND: Recent whole genome sequencing studies report that up to 6% of the childhood cancer population harbour a pathogenic variant. Identification of families with hereditary cancer may improve early detection of cancer as well as treatment outcome. READ MORE

  3. 3. Teratogenic Predisposition in Diabetic Rat Pregnancy

    Author : Andreas Ejdesjö; Ulf J Eriksson; Parri Wentzel; Niklas Nordquist; Gernot Desoye; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; diabetes; malformations; teratogenic; advanced glycation end products; AGE; RAGE; oxidative stress; ROS; gene expression; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Pre-gestational diabetes increases the risk of congenital malformation in the offspring and both morbidity and mortality in the diabetic mother and her offspring. During pregnancy, high glucose levels act as a teratogen through several cellular and biochemical pathways and increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) has a central role in diabetic embryopathy. 4. 4. Hereditary colorectal cancer : predisposition and prevention

    Author : Annelie Liljegren; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Hereditary colorectal cancer; colonoscopy; adenoma; hyperplastic polyp;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on the clinical results from a ten-year long follow-up surveillance program, including regular colonoscopy, for subjects (n=304, 780 colonoscopies) with increased risk of colorectal cancer, and on psychological aspects of the program. The cohort included persons with hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) and persons assumed to be at increased risk of colorectal cancer because they had two (Two close relatives, TCR) or three or more relatives (Hereditary colorectal cancer, HCRC) afflicted with colorectal cancer. 5. 5. Hereditary predisposition and prognostic prediction in cancer

    Author : Karin Wallander; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Cancer is a genetic disease. The cancer cells evolve clonally through changes of their genome, gaining malignant characteristics. In hereditary cancer syndromes, a genetic aberration which puts the cells one step closer to being malignant is inherited and present throughout whole body. READ MORE
