  1. 6. Multiscale Methods and Uncertainty Quantification

    Author : Daniel Elfverson; Axel Målqvist; Frédéric Legoll; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; multiscale methods; finite element method; discontinuous Galerkin; Petrov-Galerkin; a priori; a posteriori; complex geometry; uncertainty quantification; multilevel Monte Carlo; failure probability; Beräkningsvetenskap med inriktning mot numerisk analys; Scientific Computing with specialization in Numerical Analysis;

    Abstract : In this thesis we consider two great challenges in computer simulations of partial differential equations: multiscale data, varying over multiple scales in space and time, and data uncertainty, due to lack of or inexact measurements.We develop a multiscale method based on a coarse scale correction, using localized fine scale computations. 2. 7. Quantification of 4D Left Ventricular Blood Flow in Health and Disease

    Author : Jonatan Eriksson; Tino Ebbers; Carl-Johan Carlhäll; Gianni Pedrizzetti; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MRI; relative pressure; 4D flow; quantification; turbulent kinetic energy; dilated cardiomyopathy; magnetic resonance imaging; physiology; cardiac function; diastolic dysfunction;

    Abstract : The main function of the heart is to pump blood throughout the cardiovascular system by generating pressure differences created through volume changes. Although the main purpose of the heart and vessels is to lead the flowing blood throughout the body, clinical assessments of cardiac function are usually based on morphology, approximating the flow features by viewing the motion of the myocardium and vessels. 3. 8. The Quantification of Society. A Study of a Swedish Research Institute and Survey-Based Social Science

    Author : Christopher Kullenberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; quantification; survey; social sciences; SOM Institute; epistemic practice; center of calculation; Actor-Network theory; welfare state;

    Abstract : This thesis is concerned with the contemporary history of quantitative surveys in Sweden. The core epistemic practice of constructing surveys is examined empirically through a case study of the SOM Institute (Samhälle, Opinion, Medier) at University of Gothenburg. The SOM Institute has performed surveys in Sweden since 1986. READ MORE

    Abstract : Having recently registered the 500th dispute at its docket, the WTO dispute settlement system is as prolific and relevant as ever. By almost any measure, it is a great success; it has contributed to bolstering the WTO’s legitimacy, increased the judicialisation of WTO Members’ trade relations, and promoted the scientification of public international law.
