1. Holographic Wilson Loops : Quantum String Corrections
Abstract : The gauge-string duality has been one of the most exciting areas in theoretical physics as it connects strongly coupled field theories with weakly interacting strings. The present thesis concerns the study of Wilson loops in this correspondence. READ MORE

2. Axionlike particles, quantum loops, and supernovae : The role of quantum loop corrections for astrophysical ALPs
Abstract : In this thesis the quantum field theory and astrophysical phenomenology of axionlike particles (ALPs) are studied. The effective field theory of ALPs is reviewed with a special focus on quantum loops, the renormalization group equations, and the equivalent forms of the interaction between ALPs and fermions. 3. Classical and Quantum Descriptions of Proteins, Lipids and Membranes
Abstract : In this thesis the properties of proteins and membranes are studied by molecular dynamics simulations. The subject is decomposed into parts addressing free energy calculations in proteins, mechanical inclusion models for lipid bilayers, phase transitions and structural correlations in lipid bilayers and atomistic lipid bilayer models. 4. Transport Studies of Local-Gate Defined Quantum Dots in Nanowires
Abstract : This thesis focuses on electrical transport in semiconductor InAs nanowires grown by chemical beam epitaxy. Initially, transport length scales of homogeneous InAs n-type nanowires are characterized by low-temperature magnetoconductance measurements. The measurements show phase-coherent conductivity corrections. READ MORE

5. Correlations in Frustrated Magnets : Classical and Quantum Aspects
Abstract : In this thesis, we study three different aspects of the physics of frustrated magnets. First, we study the interplay of thermal and quantum fluctuations in the transverse field frustrated Ising model on the triangular lattice. READ MORE
