  1. 21. Human intraepithelial lymphocytes : a comparative study of phenotype, morphology, and functional properties of intraepithelial lymphocytes in gut and oral mucosa

    Author : Carina Lundqvist; Marie-Louise Hammarström; Sten Hammarström; Per Brandtzaeg; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; human intraepithelial lymphocytes; alimentary tract; intestinal epithelium; gut luminal antigens; gingiva; γδ T cells; immunoelectron microscopy; cytokine mRNA; RT-PCR; extrathymic T cell maturation; RAG-1; periodontitis; mucosal immune system; CD4-CD8- αβ T cells; CD8 γδ T cells;

    Abstract : Human intraepithelial lymphocytes (IEL) constitute a unique cell population situated in the first line of defense of the alimentary tract. Here they are continuously exposed to a massive antigenic load of high complexity. However, different conditions prevail along the alimentary tract. READ MORE

  3. 23. The Origin of the Genus Flavivirus and the Ecology of Tick-Borne Pathogens

    Author : John H.-O. Pettersson; Thomas Jaenson; Sven Bergström; Kenneth Nilsson; Mikael Thollesson; Per-Eric Lindgren; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Flavivirus; Virus dating; Molecular dating; Biogeography; Ixodes ricinus; Minimum infection rate; TBE; Tick-borne encephalitis virus; Rickettsia helvetica; Anaplasma phagocytophilum; Infection prevalence; RT-PCR; Biology with specialization in Systematics; Biologi med inriktning mot systematik;

    Abstract : The present thesis examines questions related to the temporal origin of the Flavivirus genus and the ecology of tick-borne pathogens. In the first study, we date the origin and divergence time of the Flavivirus genus. It has been argued that the first flaviviruses originated after the last glacial maximum. READ MORE

  4. 24. The Immune Response to One-Lung Ventilation : Clinical and Experimental Studies

    Author : Thomas Schilling; Göran Hedenstierna; Hans Hedenström; Thomas Hachenberg; Sven-Erik Ricksten; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; One-lung ventilation; open thoracic surgery; ventilation-induced lung injury; alveolar immune response; bronchoalveolar lavage; propofol; desflurane; cytokines; animal model; mRNA; RT-PCR; Medical laboratory science; Medicinsk laboratorievetenskap; anestesiologi; Anaesthesiology;

    Abstract : One-lung ventilation (OLV) as an established procedure during thoracic surgery may be injurious in terms of increased mechanical stress characterised by alveolar cell stretch and overdistension, increased cyclic tidal recruitment of alveolar units, compression of alveolar vessels and increased pulmonary vascular resistance. This may result in ventilation-induced lung injury with pro-inflammatory cytokine production, leukocyte recruitment and neutrophil-dependent tissue destruction. READ MORE

  5. 25. Qualitative and Quantitative Assessment of Cytochromes P450 mRNA in Human : Studies in the Liver, Blood and Gastrointestinal Mucosa

    Author : Mari Thörn; Lars Lööf; Anders Rane; Ellen Vinge; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; cytochrome P450; CYP1A2; CYP1B1; CYP2E1; CYP3A4; CYP3A5; P-gp; gene expression; RT-PCR; liver; blood; gastrointestinal mucosa; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Drugs and other foreign compounds must often be metabolised before they can be excreted from the body. One enzyme system that is responsible for this is the cytochrome P450 gene family (CYP). READ MORE
