  1. 1. The role of leptin in zebrafish (Danio rerio) : Novel insights into appetite regulation and reproduction

    Author : Emmanouil Tsakoumis; Monika Schmitz; Tatjana Haitina; Åsa Wallén-Mackenzie; Ana Gómez Peris; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; zebrafish; leptin; appetite; GRN; brain; reproduction; oocyte maturation; ovulation; Biology with specialization in Comparative Physiology; Biologi med inriktning mot jämförande fysiologi;

    Abstract : The hormone leptin is a peripheral metabolic signal and an important regulator of energy balance. In mammals, leptin acts on the appetite centers in the hypothalamus, causing anorexigenic functions by inhibiting food intake. It is also considered as a link between the nutritional status and the endocrine reproductive axis. READ MORE

  2. 2. Allocation of body resources to reproduction in butterflies

    Author : Fredrik Stjernholm; Bengt Karlsson; Christer Wiklund; Jane K. Hill; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Zoology; Ecology; Butterflies; Reproduction; Life histories; Trade-offs; Resource use; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : The life-history of an organism can be studied and understood in terms of acquisition and expenditure of resources. In butterflies, the use of resources for reproduction has been the focus of much research due to the possibility to easily quantify both the input of resources from different sources over the life-cycle as well as the partitioning of these resources to reproduction. 3. 3. The Complex Genetics of Mouse Reproduction and Arhritis

    Author : Maria Liljander; Immunologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; morula; B10.Q mice; genetics.; Pregnancy; CIA; reproduction; QTL; superovulation; blastocysts; oocytes; litter size; RA; NFR N mice; MHC;

    Abstract : ABSTRACT Optimal breeding of mice is very important in biomedical science today. The understanding why some strains breed better and some worse enable scientists to create better in vivo models for human diseases. READ MORE

  4. 4. Turning Privilege Into Merit : Elite Schooling, Identity, and the Reproduction of Meritocratic Belief

    Abstract : Previous research on meritocratic ideology and elite adolescent identity has mainly approached it from the outside, understanding meritocratic identity as a rhetorical cover to justify privilege. Through a frame analytic approach this study nurtures a phenomenological insider perspective, exploring through a one-year ethnography how adolescents at an elite high school experience, negotiate and perform identity in the tension between the school’s institutional definition of identity and their everyday life as young adults. Abstract : Globally, in both developed and developing countries, the twinning rates have increased since the early 70’s. A large proportion of twins are born preterm and/or small-for-gestational-age (SGA) and/or with a low birth weight. READ MORE
