1. Flow and turbulence in the discharge stream of different agitators for stirred tanks
Abstract : In this thesis, the fluid dynamic properties of the conventional Rushton turbine and another impeller type, the Scaba Radial flow Gas dispersing Turbine (with six concave blades) are compared. For comparison, point-wise velocity measurements were made in the discharge of the two turbine types using Hot-Wire Anemometry in constant temperature mode (CTA) with a split film probe. READ MORE

2. Some Fluid Dynamic Characteristics in the Scale-up of Rushton Turbine-Agitated Tanks
Abstract : Turbine-agitated tanks are used in chemical and biochemical applications to increase mixing which, in turn, affects the yield, productivity and product quality. The purpose of this work was to study the hydrodynamic influence on the scale-up of turbine-agitated tanks, commonly used in fermentation. READ MORE

3. Mixing patterns in Rushton-turbine-agitated reactors
Abstract : This Ph.D. Thesis concerns the study of mixing in Rushton turbine agitated reactors. In industrial (bio)reactors, mixing is recognised as a limiting factor that significantly affects the performance of the process. READ MORE

4. Fluid Dynamics in Stirred Vessels - Experiments and simulations of single-phase and liquid-liquid systems
Abstract : This thesis applies experimental measurement techniques and computational fluid dynamics to evaluate turbulent mixing of liquid-liquid systems in stirred vessels. Also studies of macro-instabilities in a single-phase system and how they affect flow and thus mixing are conducted. READ MORE

5. A Particle Image Velocimetry Study of Bubbly Gas-Liquid Flow
Abstract : The aim of this work is to build a framework that can be used for characterizing the bubbly gas liquid turbulent flow in the stirred bioreactor tank. To this end we have developed and modified techniques with which to measure the velocity of both dispersed gas and carrier liquid phases by the optical measurement technique, a 2-CCD camera Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system; and to characterize the turbulence by the wavelets tool, Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD).
