  1. 1. Satellite observations of auroral acceleration processes

    Author : Lars Eliasson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Aurora; particle acceleration; space plasma; magnetosphere; ionosphere; polar cap; satellite observations;

    Abstract : Measurements with satellite and sounding rocket borne instruments contain important information on remote and local processes in regions containing matter in the plasma state. The characteristic features of the particle distributions can be used to explain the morphology and dynamics of the different plasma populations. READ MORE

  2. 2. Dynamical aspects of coherent eddies in the North Atlantic Ocean : Insights from Satellite Observations

    Author : Arunraj Kondetharayil Soman; Léon Chafik; Johan Nilsson; Caroline Katsman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Eddy detection and tracking; Ocean heat content; Satellite altimetry; Lagrangian Trajectories; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi;

    Abstract : Oceanic mesoscale eddies, often referred to as the “weather of the ocean”, have horizontal scales of O(10) − O(102) kilometers and timescales spanning days to months. These structures comprise a complex system of coherent eddies (meaning they retain their shape and structure over time and space), filaments, and spirals that influence the transport of heat, salt, and nutrients in the ocean. 3. 3. Ice clouds in satellite observations and climate models

    Author : Salomon Eliasson; Corinna Hoose; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Rymdteknik; Space Technology;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns the microphysical properties of clouds made up of ice particles, called ice clouds. Ice clouds are strong modulators of the outgoing longwave radiation and incoming shortwave radiation, yet our knowledge on several key ice cloud properties, which govern the magnitude and sign of the net contribution to the Earth’s atmospheric radiation budget, is inadequate. 4. 4. Ice clouds in satellite observations and climate models

    Author : Salomon Eliasson; Tristan L’Ecuyer; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Rymdteknik; Space Technology;

    Abstract : Ice clouds have an important role in climate. They are strong modulators of the outgoing longwave radiation and the incoming shortwave radiation and are an integral part of the hydrological cycle. However, our knowledge about them is inadequate. READ MORE

  5. 5. Auroral Electric Fields From Satellite Observations and Numerical Modelling

    Author : Tomas Karlsson; KTH; []
    Keywords : Satellite measurements; electric fields; ionosphere; magnetosphere; diverging electric fields; downward current region; black aurora; westward travelling surge; auroral bulge; subauroral ion drifts SAID ; subauroral electric fields SAEF ; mid-latit; TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIKVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : This thesis is about electrodynamics of thehigh-latitude/auroral region of near-Earth space. The work ismainly based on electric field measurements made by the doubleprobe instrument on the Freja satellite at altitudes ofapproximately 800-1700 km, together with measurements fromother instruments on the same satellite, and ground-basedinstrumentation.
