  1. 1. Inflammatogenic properties of endogenous DNA

    Author : Shahin Hajizadeh; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Inflammation; mtDNA; oxidized DNA; SF; CSF; RA; dementia;

    Abstract : Bacterial DNA and CpG-containing oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) induce host inflammatory responses as a result of their content of unmethylated ¡§CpG motifs¡¨. Since the CpG motifs in the mitochondrial (mt) genome are in this respect similar to bacterial DNA, in that they are non-methylated, we investigated whether mtDNA also displays inflammatogenic potential. 2. 2. Radiobiological end-points for the theoretical evaluation of the effectiveness of carbon ions and photons in treating tumours with dynamic hypoxia

    Author : Antonovic Laura; Iuliana Toma-Dasu; Tatsuaki Kanai; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; OER; hypoxia; LOC; RCR; hypofractionation; SBRT; carbon ion; fractionation; TCP; SF; RCE; RBE; Medical Radiation Physics; medicinsk strålningsfysik;

    Abstract : Tumours are characterised by unorganised vasculature, which often results in hypoxic regions. Hypoxia is a common cause for photon radiotherapy (RT) treatment failure, as hypoxic cells require up to 2-3 times higher doses compared to well-oxygenated cells for the same effect in terms of cell kill. 3. 3. Osteoporosis in SLE

    Author : Katarina Almehed; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : osteoporosis; systemic lupus erythematosus; bone mineral density; health-related quality of life; SF-36; resistin; cross sectional study; vertebral fracture;

    Abstract : As the treatment of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) has become more effective the focus has partly shifted from main concern of short term morbidity and survival to long term complications such as osteoporosis. The aims of this thesis were to a) determine prevalence and risk factors of osteoporosis and of b) vertebral fractures c) evaluate if adequate osteoporotic treatment was provided d) determine if resistin, an adipokine with proposed pro-inflammatory properties, was associated with markers of inflammation or bone mineral density (BMD) and to e) investigate patients self reported health related quality of life (HRQOL) and its relationship to disease variables and employment status in female SLE patients. 4. 4. Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms in Swedish Male Population : Prevalence, Distress and Quality of Life

    Author : Gabriella Engström; Jerzy Leppert; Marie-Louise Walker-Engström; Lars Henningsohn; Ralph Peeker; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Public health; men; population-based study; prevalence; urinary symptom; health care consultation; DAN-PSS; distress; LUTS; postal questionnaire; health; sadness; happiness; SF-36; Quality of Life; Folkhälsomedicin;

    Abstract : The aim the thesis was to investigate, the prevalence of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS). Moreover, we examine symptom severity and different levels of distress and describe how different symptoms from the lower urinary tract affect the self-assessed health, sadness, happiness and the quality of life in men.
