  1. 1. Turbulent Shear Flow Experiments: Design of Natural Convection Rig and LDA Measurement in Swirling Jets

    Author : Abolfazl Shiri; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Self-Similar Solution; Natural Convection Boundary Layer; Axisymmetric Jet; Laser Doppler Anemometry; Swirl Number;

    Abstract : This work consist of two sections. In the first part, a facility has been installed and modified from an existing rig in order to measure velocity and temperature field of axisymmetric turbulent natural convection boundary layers. With using laser doppler anemometry and cold wire resistance thermometry. READ MORE

  2. 2. Nonlinear Dynamics of Coherent and Partially Coherent Optical Waves

    Author : Tobias Hansson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; soliton interaction; Wigner transform; logarithmically saturable media; Nonlinear Schrödinger equation; parabolic beams; partial coherence; quasilinear diffusion; modulational instability;

    Abstract : In optics an important nonlinear effect is manifested by the fact that the refractive index, in addition to its frequency dependence, also depends on the intensity of the light. Nonlinear effects are present within a wide range of optical applications e.g. the fast growing fields of fiber-optic communication and all-optical signal processing. READ MORE

  3. 3. Fracture mechanics analysis of damage initiation and evolution in fiber reinforced composites

    Author : Andrejs Pupurs; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Polymera konstruktionsmaterial; Polymeric Composite Materials;

    Abstract : When a unidirectional (UD) fiber reinforced polymer composite is loaded in fiber direction in quasi-static or in a high stress cyclic tension-tension regime, many fiber breaks may occur in random positions already during the load increase in the first cycle. This is because fiber strain to failure in UD composites is lower than the polymer matrix strain to failure. READ MORE

  4. 4. Some Mathematical Aspects of Thermo and Fluid Dynamics

    Author : Carl Fredrik Stein; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; swirling jets; vortex breakdown; conical self-similarity; Long s jet; Taylor s hypothesis; frozen turbulence hypothesis; advection velocity; conjugate heat transfer; asymptotic analysis; swirling jets;

    Abstract : This thesis contains mathematical treatments of three issues in thermo and fluid dynamics: swirling jets and vortex breakdown, Taylor's hypothesis and conjugate heat transfer. The work on swirling jets is focused on the study of the well-posedness of the conically self-similar free-vortex solutions to the Navier--Stokes equations. READ MORE

  5. 5. Micro-crack initiation and propagation in fiber reinforced composites

    Author : Andrejs Pupurs; Stephen L. Ogin; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Polymera konstruktionsmaterial; Polymeric Composite Materials;

    Abstract : Predicting micro-damage initiation and evolution is one of the key challenges for safe design of fiber reinforced polymer composites. Micro-scale damage such as, for example, single fiber break may be unnoticeable and negligible during the initial service life of composite, however, with many loading and unloading cycles this initially micro-scale damage may propagate forming macroscopic scale cracks that can significantly reduce the service lifetime or even lead to unforeseen catastrophic failure of the composite structure.
