  1. 1. Importance of serotonin-related candidate genes for human behaviour

    Author : Jonas Melke; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; serotonin; genetics; polymorphism; association study; personality; panic disorder; premenstrual dysphoria; serotonin receptor; serotonin transporter;

    Abstract : Family and twin studies have been consistent in demonstrating that genetic factors are involved in the etiology of most major psychiatric disorders, as well as in various normal personality traits. Mostly due to the efficacy of serotonin-acting drugs, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) and tricyclic antidepressants (TCA), the neurotransmitter serotonin has been implicated in a variety of common psychiatric disorders, including depression, a spectrum of anxiety disorders, and premenstrual dysphoria; moreover, some studies have suggested that also personality is influenced by serotonin. 2. 2. Ovarian hormones and effects in the brain : studies of neurosteroid sensitivity, serotonin transporter and serotonin2A receptor binding in reproductive and postmenopausal women

    Author : Anna-Carin Wihlbäck; Tord Naessén; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : estradiol; progesterone; progestin; neurosteroids; saccadic eye velocity; sedation; hormone replacement therapy HRT ; menopause; menstrual cycle; mood; serotonin; paroxetine; lysergic acid diethylamide; platelets; obstetrik och gynekologi; Obstetrics and Gynaecology;

    Abstract : Background: Estrogen has been reported to enhance well-being and quality of life during the climacteric phase. In women with an intact uterus estrogen treatment is always combined with progestins in order to protect the endometrium from hyperplasia and malignancies. READ MORE

  3. 3. Imaging serotonin and dopamine transporters in social anxiety disorder : Characterization, treatment and expectancy effects

    Author : Olof Hjorth; Tomas Furmark; Andreas Frick; Eduard Maron; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; PET; serotonin; dopamine; placebo; SSRI; CBT; MRI; Psychology; Psykologi; Psychiatry; Psykiatri; Radiology; Radiologi;

    Abstract : The monoamines serotonin and dopamine are likely to be involved in the pathophysiology of social anxiety and other affective disorders, but their respective contributions and putative interactions in the causes and cures of these disorders are still not well understood. It is also largely unknown if and how expectations of treatment success affect brain neurochemistry and neural activations, and if expectations interact with antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). 4. 4. Anabolic androgenic steroids and central monoaminergic systems : Supratherapeutic doses of nandrolone decanoate affect dopamine and serotonin

    Author : Carolina Birgner; Lena Bergström; Anna Kindlundh-Högberg; Fred Nyberg; Stefan Brené; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacology; anabolic androgenic steroids; nandrolone decanoate; dopamine; serotonin; rat; central nervous system; Pharmacology; Farmakologi;

    Abstract : Supratherapeutic doses of anabolic androgenic steroids (AASs) are administered, not only as performance-enhancing drugs in the world of sports, but also in order to modify behaviour. AAS abusers are at risk of developing serious physical and psychological side effects such as dependence and aggressive behaviour. READ MORE

  5. 5. Influence of serotonin-related genes on behavior and body weight

    Author : Jessica Bah Rösman; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Serotonin; Genes; anorexia nervosa; premenstrual dysforia; body weight; suicide; polymorphism; HTR2C; SLC6A4; GATA2; HTR3B;

    Abstract : Rationale: The neurotransmitter serotonin has been implicated in the regulation of normal behaviors, including food intake, and attributed importance for a variety of common psychiatric conditions, including major depression, suicidal behavior, eating disorders and premenstrual dysphoria. The purpose of these studies was to explore the possible influence of genetic variation in serotonin-related genes on a) body weight, b) binding capacity of the serotonin transporter in the brain of suicide attempters and c) a disorder for which numerous findings suggest serotonin to play a key role, i.
