1. From single-cell transcriptomics to single-molecule counting
Abstract : RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) technology has been progressing so fast in the last few years and made it possible to perform transcriptome analysis at single-cell level that was even unimaginable a few years before. Nowadays, the importance of gene expression analysis at the single-cell level is increasingly appreciated for the study of complex heterogeneous tissue. READ MORE

2. Lanthanide-mediated C-F Bond Activation Method Development and Mechanistic Investigation
Abstract : The use of transition-metals and main-group Lewis acids has proven to be an outstanding source for activation and subsequent functionalization of fluorinated compounds. However, the first is mainly limited to C(sp2)–F bonds which partially are activated by an adjacent heteroatom, and the latter is limited to simple C(sp3)–F bonds due to particularly strong Lewis acid character. 3. Toxicometabolomics and biotransformation product screening in single zebrafish embryos
Abstract : Over the last decade environmental agencies worldwide have escalated their work to phase out animal testing for the purposes of chemical regulation. Meanwhile the number of commercially available chemicals and the requirements for hazard assessments have both increased, creating a large need for substitution of traditional in vivo assays with in vitro tests. 4. Dynamics and Fluctuations in Single-Electron Tunneling Devices
Abstract : In recent years, it has been routinely achieved to build nanoscale electronic devices, which generate current pulses carrying only a single elementary charge. Realizations of these single-electron emitters are based on time-dependently driven quantum dots, on single-electron turnstiles built from superconductor/normal-metal hybrid structures, and also on nanosystems employing Lorentzian voltage pulses or surface acoustic waves. 5. Towards single Ce ion detection in a bulk crystal for the development of a single-ion qubit readout scheme
Abstract : The work presented in this thesis was concerned with investigating the relevant spectroscopic properties of Ce ions randomly doped in an Y2SiO5 crystal at low temperatures (around 4 K), in order to develop a technique and an experimental set-up to detect the fluorescence photons emitted by a single Ce ion. The aim of the work was to determine whether a single Ce ion (referred to as the readout ion) can be used as a local probe to sense the quantum state of a neighbouring single-ion qubit via a state-selective interaction between the readout and qubit ion.
