  2. 2. The causation of konzo : studies on a paralytic disease in Africa

    Author : Thorkild Tylleskär; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Spastic paraparesis; konzo; cassava; cyanide; thiocyanate; inorganic sulphate; HTLV-I; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Epidemics of a permanent, non-progressive spastic paraparesis with sudden onset hasbeen reported from several rural areas of sub-Saharan Africa. Studies in East Africasuggested an association with dietary cyanide intake from unprocessed cassava. READ MORE

  3. 3. On the Site of the Lesion in Konzo : Clinical and Neurophysiological Studies on a Non-Progressive Upper Motor Neuron Disorder

    Author : Desire Tshala-Katumbay; Andrew Eisen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurosciences; Konzo; upper motor neuron diseases; WHO criteria; electroencephalography; evoked potentials; brain involvement; Neurovetenskap; Neurology; Neurologi; Neurology; neurologi;

    Abstract : Konzo is a permanent spastic para/tetraparesis occurring in undernourished populations in Africa relying on insufficiently processed bitter cassava, which contains cyanogenic compounds, as staple food. Its pathogenetic mechanism is unknown. Our studies aimed at clarifying the lesion in konzo. READ MORE

  4. 4. Velocity controlled dynamometry and gait analysis : development of methods and applications

    Author : Lennart Gransberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Dynamometry; torque; measurement error; overshoot; isokinetic; concentric; eccentric; gait analysis; three-dimensional; electrogoniometer; electromagnetic tracking;

    Abstract : The isokinetic systems developed in the present study can measure torque in maximal voluntary and passive movements. The torque recordings may be combined with surface EMG recordings from pairs of antagonistic muscles involved in the movement. Healthy subjects and patients with spastic paresis have been examined. 5. 5. Prevention of transfusion transmitted infections : donor screening and characteristics of recipient populations

    Author : Elsa Tynell; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : HTLV-I and II; blood donor screening; transfusion recipients; case-mix; survival rates; false-reactive test results; cost effectiveness;

    Abstract : Minimising the risk for transfusion transmitted infections (TTIs) relies on selection of safe donors, including microbiological screening, and avoidance of unnecessary transfusions. Blood donor screening for HTLV-I and II, was introduced in Sweden in 1994. READ MORE
