  1. 1. Competition, Coexistence and Character Displacement : In a Young Avian Hybrid Zone

    Author : Niclas Vallin; Anna Qvarnström; Andrew Hendry; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Competition; coexistence; hybridization; ecological speciation; character displacement; pied flycatcher; collared flycatcher; Biology; Biologi; Animal Ecology; Zooekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates the ecological and evolutionary implications of a recent secondary contact between two closely related bird species: collared (Ficedula albicollis) and pied (F. hypoleuca) flycatchers. READ MORE

  2. 2. Functional and structural characterizations of phytoplankton-bacteria interactions in response to environmental challenges

    Author : Eva Sörenson; Catherine Legrand; Elin Lindehoff; Jarone Pinhassi; Sonya Dyhrman; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Interactions; phytoplankton; microalgae; bacteria; communities; aquatic; diversity; functions; structure; species-specific; microbiome; core microbiome; response diversity; resilience; resource partitioning; competition; coexistence; amplicon sequencing; metatranscriptome; Akvatisk ekologi; Aquatic Ecology; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : Microorganisms, such as phytoplankton and bacteria, make up ≈70% of aquatic biomass and contribute 50-85% of the oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere. The microbial loop concept and the discovery of the large diversity in microbial communities acknowledge that biotic interactions between microorganisms in addition to resource competition enable the recycling of energy and nutrients in aquatic food webs. 3. 3. Hydrogen Production by Caldicellulosiruptor species: The Organism and the Metabolism

    Author : Ahmad Zeidan; Teknisk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Extreme thermophile; Caldicellulosiruptor; Biohydrogen; Co-culture; Coexistence; Hydrogen tolerance; Genome-scale reconstruction; In silico; Flux balance analysis;

    Abstract : Hydrogen holds a great promise as an efficient and clean future energy carrier due to its high energy density and lack of pollutant generation. Anaerobic degradation of organic substrates by heterotrophic microorganisms enables the production of hydrogen from a wide spectrum of agricultural feedstock and waste products. READ MORE

  4. 4. Ecological interactions in human modified landscapes : Landscape dependent remedies for the maintenance of biodiversity and ecosystem services

    Author : Arvid Bolin; Biodiversitet; []
    Keywords : Central place foraging; Agriculture; Competition; Ecosystem service; Species coexistence; bumble bees; landscape ecology; Biodiversity; Agri-environment scheme; Central place foraging; jordbruk; konkurrens; landskaps ekologi; humlor; bin;

    Abstract : Modern agricultural practices have led to an intensification of the agricultural landscape which has negatively affected both biodiversity and the ecosystem services it provides. In my thesis I have used ecological theory of optimal foraging to try and explain how landscape structure, landscape composition and agricultural management can explain the loss of biodiversity and how remedies can efficiently be implemented. 5. 5. Predators in low arctic tundra and their impact on community structure and dynamics

    Author : Maano Aunapuu; Tarja Oksanen; Ola Atlegrim; Oswald J. Schmitz; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; arthropods; coexistence; community dynamics; competition; food webs; hypothesis of exploitation ecosystems; intraguild predation; small mustelids; trophic cascades; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; zooekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Abstract : The abundance of predators and their impact on ecosystem dynamics is a vividly discussed topic in current ecology. In my studies, incorporating field observations, field experiments and theoretical modeling, I explored the importance of predators and predation in a low arctic tundra ecosystem in northern Norway.
