  1. 1. Targeted analysis of bioactive steroids and oxycholesterols : Method development and application

    Author : Neil de Kock; Jonas Bergquist; Ulf Diczfalusy; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Steroids; Oxycholesterols; Supercritical Fluid Chromatography; Mass Spectrometry; Kemi med inriktning mot analytisk kemi; Chemistry with specialization in Analytical Chemistry;

    Abstract : Peripheral steroids and oxycholesterols are important lipid compounds controlling various functions in the human body. Steroid analysis of biological samples is routinely employed in the clinical environment as an essential source of information on endocrine and metabolic disorders. READ MORE

  2. 2. Blood flow and metabolism in the corpus luteum of the rat : in vivo and in vitro studies on the ovarian luteal and follicular compartment of the rat

    Author : Mats Gåfvels; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Ovary; follicle; corpus luteum; blood flow; metabolism; luteinizing hormone; noradrenaline; antidiuretic hormone;

    Abstract : The ovary undergoes cyclic changes in follicular growth and luteogenesis due to the action of gonadotropins and steroids. The ovary and especially the corpus luteum has an exteremely high blood flow. There is a gap in our knowledge about the physiological role of the high blood flow of the corpus luteum. READ MORE

  3. 3. Bone Metabolism in Men

    Author : Peter Gillberg; Olof Johnell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Male osteoporosis; Bone mineral density; Growth hormone; Insulin-like growth factors; Sex hormones; Growth hormone replacement; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicine; medicin;

    Abstract : In this thesis, the importance of the growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system and sex steroids for male bone metabolism has been investigated, and the effects of continuous low dose GH replacement in GH deficient (GHD) adults. In a population-based sample of men, positive correlations were found between bone mineral density (BMD) and IGF-I, IGF-II, IGF binding protein (IGFBP)-3 and the testosterone/sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) ratio. 4. 4. Growth Hormone and Anabolic Androgenic Steroids : Effects on Neurochemistry and Cognition

    Author : Alfhild Grönbladh; Mathias Hallberg; Jörgen Isgaard; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Growth hormone; anabolic androgenic steroids; nandrolone decanoate; insulin-like growth factor; GABAB; opioids; memory; water maze; autoradiography; central nervous system; rats; Biological Research on Drug Dependence; Biologisk beroendeforskning;

    Abstract : Growth hormone (GH) stimulates growth and metabolism but also displays profound effects on the central nervous system (CNS). GH affects neurogenesis and neuroprotection, and has been shown to counteract drug-induced apoptosis in the brain. READ MORE

  5. 5. Hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers in Baltic Sea biota : Natural production, food web distribution and biotransformation

    Author : Dennis Lindqvist; Lillemor Asplund; Walter Vetter; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; OH-PBDEs; Baltic Sea; Biosynthesis; Environmental fate; Wildlife exposure; Metabolism; Analytical methods; Ceramium tenuicorne; Blue mussel; Gammarus spp.; Stickleback; Perch; Grey Seal; miljökemi; Environmental Chemistry;

    Abstract : Hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (OH-PBDEs) are naturally produced in aquatic ecosystems e.g. by algae. Many OH-PBDEs have been observed to be highly bioactive and to cause adverse effects through several pathways, e. READ MORE
