  1. 16. Studies on a novel oxidative mechanism for elimination of extrahepatic cellular cholesterol

    Author : Amir H M Babiker; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Recently, a new oxidative mechanism for elimination of cholesterol from extrahepatic cells by sterol 27-hydroxylase was described. This mechanism involves conversion of cholesterol into 27-hydroxycholesterol and cholestenoic acid. READ MORE

  2. 17. Characterization of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARa) regulated acyl-CoA thioesterases involved in lipid metabolism

    Author : Mary C Hunt; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Acyl-CoA thioesterase; acyl-CoA; peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha; coenzyme A; bile acid metabolism; lipid metabolism.;

    Abstract : The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARalpha) is a key nuclear receptor in the control of lipid metabolism. Target genes for PPARalpha include many enzymes involved in the oxidation of fatty acids in mitochondria and peroxisomes. READ MORE

  3. 18. Global Regulation of Snf1 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae: A case study of experimental systems biology

    Author : Jie Zhang; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; AMP-activated protein kinase AMPK ; glucose derepression; energy homeostasis; target of rapamycin complex 1 TORC1 ; catabolite repression; Snf1;

    Abstract : Cells commonly face environmental changes and have evolved various regulatory mechanisms to adjust their metabolism accordingly. One such key regulator in S. cerevisiae is the Snf1 kinase, which belongs to the conserved AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) family in all eukaryotes. READ MORE

  4. 19. Studies on the effects of thyroid hormone on cholesterol and lipoprotein metabolism

    Author : Ylva Bonde; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Elevated plasma lipids, particularly cholesterol within low density lipoproteins, is an important risk factor for developing atherosclerosis which can cause angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, and stroke. Thyroid hormone (TH) has a strong influence on lipid metabolism and the aim of this thesis was to gain more insight into how TH modulates cholesterol and lipoprotein metabolism. READ MORE

  5. 20. Cholesterol turnover in acute myelogenous leukemia with special emphasis on regulation of low density lipoprotein receptor expression in leukemic cells

    Author : Loukas Tatidis; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Cellular cholesterol requirements are met by receptor mediated uptake of cholesterol in low density lipoprotein (LDL) particles and/or by endogenous synthesis, the rate limiting enzyme in the synthesis pathway being 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutary coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase. Expressions of both the LDL receptor and HMG-CoA reductase genes are normally under end product repression by cellular cholesterol. READ MORE
