  1. 1. Sudden Cardiac death in Swedish orienteers

    Author : Lars Wesslén; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; sudden cardiac death; orienteers; myocarditis; arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; infektionssjukdomar; Infectious Diseases;

    Abstract : An accumulation of sudden unexpected cardiac deaths (SUCD) occurred in young Swedish orienteers, most of whom were elite athletes. From 1979 to 1992 the incidence in 18 to 34 year old male elite orienteers ranked on the national level the same year as death was calculated to 30 (per 100,000), which represents a 20 to 40 fold increase from the expected rate. 2. 2. Sudden cardiac death among the young in Sweden 1992-1999 : from epidemiology to support of the bereaved

    Author : Aase Wisten; Johan Herlitz; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Epidemiology; Symptoms; Sudden cardiac death; Young; Prevention; Sweden; Electrocardiogram; Forensic diagnosis; Athletic activities; Risk factors; Familiy; Bereavement; Public health science; Folkhälsovetenskap;

    Abstract : Sudden cardiac death (SCD) in a young person is a rare but tragic event, and the potential of prevention is unknown. The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the prevention by analysing SCD in the young in Sweden during the period 1992-1999. Data of SCD in the young based on a national registry is not previously reported. READ MORE

  3. 3. Novel approaches using electrocardiographic imaging for early detection of ARVC in patients and relatives and symptoms preceding sudden death

    Author : Varvara Kommata; Carina Blomström-Lundqvist; Elena Sciaraffia; Domenico Corrado; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy; diagnosis; gene carriers; body surface mapping; electrocardiographic imaging; sudden cardiac death; Cardiology; Kardiologi; Cardiology; Kardiologi;

    Abstract : Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC) is an inherited disease of the myocardium, predominantly affecting the right ventricle (RV). Arrhythmias are common among patients with the disease and Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) can occur even in early stages. READ MORE

  4. 4. Physical Activity and Cardiovascular Disease

    Author : Kasper Andersen; Johan Sundström; Claes Held; Frieder Braunschweig; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physical activity; epidemiology; cohort study; heart failure; cardiovascular disease; arrhythmias; atrial fibrillation; bradyarrhythmias; sudden cardiac death; heart failure; stroke; ischemic heart disease; cardiovascular death; maximal exercise capacity; muscle strength; skeletal muscle morphology; Kardiologi; Cardiology; Epidemiology; Epidemiologi;

    Abstract : The aim was to investigate associations of fitness and types and levels of physical activity with subsequent risk of cardiovascular disease.Four large-scale longitudinal cohort studies were used. The exposures were different measures related to physical activity and the outcomes were obtained through linkage to the Swedish In-Patient Register. READ MORE

  5. 5. Acute coronary syndromes. The prognostic importance of hypertension, diabetes and vectorcardiographic markers

    Author : Markus Lingman; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; acute coronary syndromes; hypertension; diabetes; percutaneous coronary intervention; prognosis; myocardial ischemia; coronary artery disease; electrocardiography; vectorcardiography; arrhythmia; sudden death; electrophysiology;

    Abstract : Research questions: 1 Is hypertension and diabetes associated with the future risk of death, and recurrent manifestations of cardiovascular disease in acute coronary syndromes (ACS)? 2 How does myocardial ischemia affect depolarization and repolarization of the heart during the early phase of an acute myocardial infarction? 3 What is the prognostic value of accepted vectorcardiographic markers in relation to future risk of sudden cardiac death after ACS? Methodology: Papers I, III and IV studied patients with ACS prospectively and consecutively included at the coronary care unit of Sahlgrenska University Hospital. Paper I deals with 2,329 patients who were followed for a median of 8 years. READ MORE
