1. Bioactive Carbohydrates in Vining Peas (Pisum sativum) - Variation in alpha-galactoside content and the colonic fermentation of sugar alcohols
Abstract : The composition of the colonic microflora is essential for the health of the human host. To be able to survive, the microflora is dependent of a continuous supply of substrate. In this respect dietary fibre and other indigestible carbohydrates, of which the consumption in affluent societies is generally low, are of great importance. READ MORE

2. Synthesis and Rearrangement of Epoxy Sugars
Abstract : Ring-Contraction of sugar-derived epoxy alcohols, functionalised in position 1 and 6, by treatment with lithium bromide and N, N, N', N'-tetramethylurea in refluxing toluene gave enantiomerically pure a,b-unsaturated aldehydes of furanosides. O-Glycosidic epoxy alcohols gave only one, easily purified, aldehyde in approximately 30-60% yield depending on the substitution pattern. READ MORE

3. Synthetic biology approaches for improving production of fatty acid-derived compounds in cyanobacteria
Abstract : The environmental consequences associated with the use of fossil-sourced fuels and chemicals have brought with it a realization that future development must move in a more sustainable direction. Currently available biofuels or renewably produced chemical, such as bioethanol or biodiesel, are produced from microbial fermentation of sugar-rich crops or by chemical conversion of natural oils or fats. 4. Development of Surface-Based Methods for Studies of Non-Electrolyte Membrane Transport
Abstract : Membrane-transport proteins are a diverse family of proteins that all span the cell membrane where they control the transfer of nutrients, metabolites and ions into and out of the cell. Due to their vital role for the function of cells, reliable methods, preferably with high-throughput capacity, to study this class of proteins are essential in fundamental studies as well as in discovery and development of new drugs. 5. Materials prepared using graphite oxides : properties and applications
Abstract : Graphite oxides are hydrophilic materials, which have attracted a lot of attention due to unique properties and possible applications. The current thesis includes studies of fundamental properties and applications of graphite oxides as well as materials prepared from graphite oxides such as graphene oxide membranes, defect-rich graphite oxide, reduced graphene oxide and activated reduced graphene oxide.
