  1. 1. Environmental assessment of incinerator residue utilisation

    Author : Susanna Toller; Jon Petter Gustafsson; Dan Berggren Kleja; Erik Kärrman; Thomas H. Christensen; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; MSWI bottom ash; wood ash; recycling; LCA; environmental assessment; geochemical speciation modelling; dissolved organic matter; copper Cu ; Environmental engineering; Miljöteknik;

    Abstract :  In Sweden, utilisation of incinerator residues outside disposal areas is restricted by environmental concerns, as such residues commonly contain greater amounts of potentially toxic trace elements than the natural materials they replace. On the other hand, utilisation can also provide environmental benefits by decreasing the need for landfill and reducing raw material extraction. READ MORE

  2. 2. Life Cycle Assessment of Asphalt Roads : Decision Support at the Project Level

    Author : Ali Azhar Butt; Björn Birgisson; Nicole Kringos; Susanna Toller; Stephen T. Muench; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Asphalt roads; life cycle assessment; feedstock energy; warm mix asphalt additives; green procurement; decision support; laboratory investigation; pavement design.; Byggvetenskap; Civil and Architectural Engineering; Transportvetenskap; Transport Science;

    Abstract : Transport infrastructures such as roads are assets for the society as they not only ensure mobility but also strengthen society’s economy. Considerable amount of energy and materials, that include bitumen, aggregates and asphalt, are required to build and maintain roads. READ MORE

  3. 3. Life cycle assessment in early planning of transport systems : Decision support at project and network levels

    Author : Carolina Liljenström; Anna Björklund; Jonas Åkerman; Susanna Toller; Robert Karlsson; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The Swedish Climate Policy Framework implies that the Swedish transport sector must reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to nearly zero by 2045. Previous studies have – using life cycle assessment – shown that indirect greenhouse gas emissions from the vehicle and infrastructure life cycle are significant and should be considered in transport policy and planning of transport systems, in addition to direct emissions of vehicle operation. 4. 4. Life cycle assessment of transport systems and transport infrastructure : Investigating methodological approaches and quantifying impacts at project and network levels

    Author : Carolina Liljenström; Anna Björklund; Susanna Toller; Rolf André Bohne; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Strategier för hållbar utveckling; Strategies for sustainable development;

    Abstract : Reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector is a key challenge to reach global climate targets and limit global warming to below 2 ºC. The use of life cycle assessment (LCA) may provide knowledge about the environmental impacts of transport systems so that emission reduction measures can be identified. READ MORE

  5. 5. Consideration of life cycle energy use and greenhouse gas emissions for improved road infrastructure planning

    Author : Sofiia Miliutenko; Anna Björklund; Jonas Åkerman; Annica Carlsson; Susanna Toller; Rolf André Bohne; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Greenhouse gas GHG emissions; energy use; life cycle assessment LCA ; road infrastructure planning; Planering och beslutsanalys; Planning and Decision Analysis;

    Abstract : Global warming is one of the biggest challenges of our society. The road transport sector is responsible for a big share of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, which are considered to be the dominant cause of global warming. READ MORE
